sys_process and wkhtmltopdf

Anibal Escobar
Hi, I'm trying to use wkhmtltopdf on a Centos 5 machine running Lasso
9. The following code hangs the page and the pdf is not generated.

        local('cmd'='/usr/local/bin/wkhtmltopdf -q -B 12 -L 12 -R 12 -T 12 -O
Portrait -s Letter http://www.google.com google.pdf')
        local('shell') = sys_process('/bin/bash',array('-c', #cmd));
        local('out') = #shell->read;
        !#out->size ? #out = #shell->readerror;
        #shell->detach;
        #shell->close;

I've verified the path to wkhtmltopdf and bash. The permissions on
wkhtmltopdf are 755. When the command is run on the command line, the
pdf is generated. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
Anibal Escobar

Hi Anibal,

Try this wkhtmltopdf type:
https://gist.github.com/iamjono/7489893
(You will also need this trait: https://gist.github.com/iamjono/7172546)

Hi, I'll give that a try. The link to the reference trait goes to a
404 page.

Thanks,

Just used the type and trait and ran:

wkhtmltopdf('http://www.google.com','google.pdf',-removelast)

and I get the same behavior as before - page hangs, pdf is not
generated. There must be something else I'm missing.

Thanks,
Anibal Escobar

There's a "bug" that occasionally adds a blank page to the end of the PDF. The remove last keyword removes the last page :)

Hi, I made the directory in which the pdf is to be generated 777
permissions just for testing purposes, and still no pdf, no error,
page just hangs. I've even made lasso the owner of wkhtmltopdf with
execute permission. What else could I be missing?

Thanks,
Anibal Escobar

Re: sys_process and wkhtmltopdf

Jonathan Guthrie-3
Firstly, grab the latest gist, I have found a small bug that duplicated default options, but would not be affecting the runtime.
Secondly, on the commandline, if you type in
wkhtmltopdf -h
What do you get?

Then in your Lasso 9 Admin quick code drawer:

wkhtmltopdf('http://google.com','/pdfcache/test1.pdf')

Replacing the directory with what you have in your webroot already.

If the type is loaded correctly and wkhtmltopdf is installed correctly, you should see a PDF appear in your directory.

I restarted lasso and voila, it works now! One question - how should
the & for a parameter in the web page url be encoded? I've tried %26
and & and neither work.

Thanks,

Glad it's working for you now.
Try not encoding the & URL at all - it's used as a command line arg.

Thanks

Unencoded there is a silent fail - no error, no pdf. I need to print
a multi page pdf like this:

http://example.com?client=xyz&page=1 http://example.com?client=xyz&page=2
  http://example.com?client=xyz&page=3

Are you trying to get it to do all 3 pages at once?
I suggest you create 3 PDF's then join them.

Re: sys_process and wkhtmltopdf

Anibal Escobar
It works perfectly well to create a multipage pdf without the param,
so for example:

http://example.com?page=1 http://example.com?page=2 http://example.com?page=3

works. It's just the & sign (and the parameter) that's tripping it up.

Thanks,
Anibal Escobar

In Jono's code, try wrapping the file name in double quotes.

That should make it work.

In this application, the parameters are all numbers, so I just
concatenated them into one parameter to avoid the &. Didn't get a
chance to try your suggestion, but thanks.
