Xserve replacement

French, Shelane
Hi Lassoers,

We currently have 2 Xserves that are still in service. We have to look at
what we going to do when we need to replace these machines. It has to be a
rack mountable server to meet the requirements of our data center. On
these machines we currently have licenses for Lasso 8.5.6. If we go to a
linux box, can we get a "converted" license from Mac to Linux? We do not
have plans to upgrade the apps on these machines to Lasso 9 due to lack of
funding on these apps. However, we do have to maintain them as they are.

Ideas?

-Shelane

I had exactly this set up and moved the Amazon cloud.   In 5 years we have had minimal problems and virtually 100% uptime.  Costing me on average around 4cents per hour on the spot price and 10c on the fixed price.  I had some issues getting Lasso 8.5 working initially on CentOS and Ubuntu but once these were resolved they have trucked along fine.  I spent a long time avoiding Linux until I realised it was OSX in another guise, as soon as a I figured the folder structure I never looked back.  Biggest deal was

NO DATA CENTRE !!
NO HARDWARE !!
100% Scalable
Brilliant for demos - just spool up another instance for an hour, do the demo and drop it
MySQL - use Amazon RDS, all backups done, read replication one click process and super reliable
FAST

Overall this is the way I would fixed the same problem and its been great.

Best
Gordon

ONLY caveat - if you do use the spot price version make sure you select persistent instance because if it drops due to pricing it wont come back up if you dont !!  I have lost service twice in 5 years second time for minutes first time for longer as I did not realise the image would not come back up.  Amazon support is excellent, responsive and available 24/7 via email

We are a US government lab with our own data center. We will not be able
to go to an offsite cloud.

Paul, this looks like a very interesting option.

Re: Xserve replacement

maxwellk2
In reply to this post by French, Shelane
Hi Shelane,

I've been struggling with this issue as well for three Xserves approaching EOL. Linux is an excellent option for Lasso, and if you're familiar with using the command line on the Mac then the learning curve isn't so steep, and your license should work for the Linux version though I recommend upgrading to 8.6. Having only rudimentary knowledge of the command line and Linux, I was able to get Lasso 8.6 running under CentOS 5.8 within a couple hours. But I have other services that are keeping me stuck to the Mac OS and performance needs that make virtualization with Amazon or Rackspace too expensive.

Here are some other open racking options:

        http://www.h-sq.com/products/minirack/
        http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Macessity/MX4V2/
        http://www.mk1manufacturing.com/mk1manufacturing.com/MMR-2G-5U.html

It makes me nervous running Mac minis, under the hood they're basically laptop components. However, the price/performance ratio is pretty compelling as new minis are exceeding benchmarks of the last round of fully loaded Xserves, power consumption is way lower than Xserves, and the current form factors make the internal components more accessible for upgrading.

Talking to a handful of mini colocation vendors suggests low failure rates, of course they would, but I tend to agree with them based on my own experience. Though I have see a 2011 mini Server have both drives fail after only a year, and both drives failed within a week of each other. Go with SSD if you can and have at least one spare mini immediately available just in case.

Who knows about the upcoming Mac Pro as a replacement, racking options may take a while to show up, but I'm sure they will. A few of those mini colocation vendors are already gearing up to host them.

        http://www.macstadium.com/blog/new-mac-pro-hosting-and-colocation-will-be-here-soon/

Still, the specs don't include a redundant power supply or LOM, or even the possibility of internal RAIDable drives as best I can tell.

Curious to hear how your decision making progresses.

Thanks,
Max

Re: Xserve replacement

French, Shelane
We have Linux for our internal servers already, so I'm not worried about
the learning curve. We can't upgrade to 8.6 due to the differences in
LassoSoft's license model. We haven't had the issue with 8.5.x that other
users have had, so I'm not sure that it matters for us anyway. The current
serial numbers contain the OS name in them, so I didn't think I could just
use them on a Linux box.

I'd switch to Linux, it's way faster, you can upgrade to Lasso 8.6 and run the latest version with a 64-bit OS so you can have more RAM. However the phone home part of Lasso 8.6 might be a problem.

Yes, any "phone home" stuff is blocked here.

Well you can buy it outright too. Not sure what the cost is.. You are going to run into problems with hardware not working on older Operating Systems and be unable to run Lasso. I've already run into this.

Pricing depends on the number of separate lasso sites you need to run on
each box. This has an upgrade calculator:

If you buy a perpetual license, I don't think it phones home. (Same with
L9 perpetual licenses.)

Re: Xserve replacement

Marc Pope-2
In reply to this post by French, Shelane
In the past Kerry had done free transfers to Linux.. So that's possible. Just realized lasso 8.5 only technically runs on CentOS 4.. You can make it run on 5 with some hacks.. But 6 is now the most current version and you'll want to keep up so your hardware can keep up.. I guess you need to figure out how long this app needs to stick around.

The perpetual 8.6 licenses do not phone home.

We actually used Jason Huck's guide to get it running for 5. We have Red
Hat, so it worked just fine with his fixes.

For a Mac Mini, if you buy a current machine it will come with Mac OS X 10.8.  Lasso Professional 8.5.6 isn't supported officially but it will run if you download and install the updated Apache Connector (Lasso8ConnectorforApache2.2.so).

Re: Xserve replacement

Lasso Talk
In reply to this post by French, Shelane
We have the same problem.
We solved it so that we bought 10pcs Xserve 4 core and 8 core through
via eBay from seller in the USA.
Xserve 4 core at 275 USD / pc, 8 core at 500 USD / pc. If you need HDD
case, 50 USD each.
3 Xserve we use as replacement parts for, because all models are same.
We must use this solution because we have running software on servers
only on OSX.

For us is this solution very quickly and we get time (any years) to slow
migration to another OS.

There's always this thunderbolt chassis from Sonnet.  There are 1U and 2U
chassis options.
