What is this: †

I had some instances where this:

showed up.

I could not find any reference to it.

Anybody knows why this 'cross sign' appears"

I have seen that show up from copy that I cut and pasted from Microsoft Word. Possibly an option-space?

Yes, that's true, if you have an editor such BBEdit you can show "invisible"
characters and it will surely show you something like grey "€" instead of
spaces somewhere in your code.

I've found you can avoid most of those problems if you take a word
document, do a Save As and select Text Only as the format.
