Weekly Skills Development Workshops

Sean Stephens-2
Hey Y'all

I was serious about starting some 15-30 minute "Lightning Workshops" on various subjects, and plan to start ASAP. Maybe even Friday, if we can get our act together.

I have some ideas for potential subjects, in no particular order. Can anyone else suggest ones they would like to hear? Or ones you could do?

- Lasso 9: The top 5 changes from Lasso 8
- Lasso 9 The best 5 new things in Lasso 9
- Lasso 9: LassoApps in Lasso 9
- Using LassoLab: The Absolute Basics
- Using LassoLab: Advanced Features
- Using LassoLab: Debugging
- Using LassoLab: The Profiler
- Using LassoLab: Other Kewl Plugins
- Modern Syntax VS Vintage Syntax
- Lasso 9: The Elements of Style
- Using Coda 2 and Lasso 9
- Troubleshooting MySQL and Lasso
- Using Lasso Instances: The Absolute Basics
- Using Lasso Instances: Power-Usage
- Lasso 9 Tricks: The Magic of &
- Lasso 9 Tricks: What are Traits?
- Lasso 9 Tricks: What are Query Expressions?
- Lasso 9 Tricks: What is Multiple Dispatch?
- Lasso 9 Tricks: Mining the Lasso 9 Error Stack
- Lasso 9 Tricks: Just in Time Compilation VS Compiling
- Lasso 9 Tricks: The Glory of AtBegin
- Using Enigma Machine
- Leveraging the Lasso Store

If you guys can add to my list, we'll start compiling 15 minute talks on them (and maybe even asking some external people to help us with them?), and our weekly workshops can begin.

Thanks in advance for the input!

I (and probably Jolle, but I won't speak for him) could do a
talk on Knop framework for Lasso 8 or 9.

Will these talks be presented as html or screencasts as well or will we have to catch them at a given date/time?

Something on best practices for working with encrypted table data in MySQL.

Securing forms and file uploads with forms.

Re: Weekly Skills Development Workshops

Jim Sheffer-3
In reply to this post by Sean Stephens-2
Like I said somewhere on one of my recent posts somewhere (I think!):

It may need to be a short series but when coding from 8.x to 9 syntax what are the preferred ways for even some of the "easier" types of code (If.../if maybe, if it is different?) to be done.  Just because 8.x code works, doesn't mean it is in"true" Lasso9 syntax(it could be just backwards compatible) - I think that is a BIG barrier for some to move to Lasso9.

I've been watching a lot of tutorials on certain things lately and have discovered why some tutorials are MUCH better than others:  No matter what level the tutorials are for, they are all done from a "beginners" perspective.  A good example is tagswap - I used to have such a horrible time understanding how to implement or use some of the great solutions, simply because they "skipped over" some of the basics, like "Exactly" how to use the solutions - much was "assumed" that the user already knew.

When watching some of the tutorials I have seen, even the ones that were "refresher" tutorials for me, or "higher level" tutorials (and the basics easily understood) did not get boring even though they explained everything from the very beginning, not skipping steps that the author thought would be "understood" by the watchers... (I remember one where the presenter kept repeating, over and over (Even I wanted to strangle him!) "Add a tag, save a tag!" - it was almost comical but it worked!

I can give examples of some youtube "tutorials" like this to anyone who want to know how to do a "good" tutorial for everyone to understand :-)

Off the top of my head and it may have just been so long ago or a very beginner's tutorial but I seem to remember a tutorial on arrays - the subject was rather "too" simple for me but I was impressed by the video for keeping to the basics while trying to expand through the topic.  I mention this because the tutorial was by our very own Tami Williams :-)

Just my 2c worth...

Re: Weekly Skills Development Workshops

Patrick Larkin-2
Wait, there are tutorials?

Anyway, I agree with everything in this message.

What would be cool to me is seeing a fairly complex example of a page in classic syntax rewritten in new syntax with explanations of why.  For instance, a lot of my old stuff is INLINE and then a [records] set.  It'd be nice to see the proper way to do it efficiently and for maximum reuse using libraries or whatever they are called now.

Re: Weekly Skills Development Workshops

Steve Upton
In reply to this post by Sean Stephens-2

I'd like to see something on minimal syntax.

Sometimes I see code examples and I think "you can do that?"

For instance, in some L9 examples on the LassoSoft site right now I've seen  var(thing) = 'hello'  without the quotes around the "thing". Is that allowed?

I'd love to know what I can leave out or other suggestions regarding how to streamline coding

thanks

Steve Upton

Quotes around var names and local names is now optional.
local(x = 'hello)
... is valid :)

LOL, Rachel just spotted a typo.

It should be:
local(x = 'hello')

Great list! Looking forward to them already.

I haven't used Lasso 9 AT ALL so some of these may be a given and not necessary:

- Asynchronous Email in Lasso 9
- Lasso 9 Scheduling (differences from Lasso 8 Schedule_Event tag)
- Lasso 9 & Authorize.net: The Basics
- Lasso 9 & Authorize.net: The "Not-So" Basics
- Lasso 9 and AJAX(jQuery) File Upload Basics

Which Authorize.net method?  AIM, CIM, other?

I converted the AuthorizeNet_AIM tag to work under 9.  No change
in functionality there: construct the string, post the string,
parse the string response.

I do have a few debugging tips I've learned over the years upon
which I could elaborate.

The CIM method is extremely detailed and has a couple dozen
methods IIRC.  It has many more features.  You have to deal with
XML instead of a string.  It's slightly more complex than AIM,
but many of the same concepts apply: construct the XML, post the
XML, parse the XML response.
