Voucher Codes [LP8.6]

Jon Harris
Hi List

We are looking at developing a project to issue and accept gift card vouchers on-line.

We have done this before - but the codes we generated, were quite short. It was based on a prefix followed by some random numbers then a sequence number followed by mod11 check digit. With this new client, it is likely we will be generating a much higher number of codes, and I am concerned about someone guessing a code.

I was wondering if anyone had come across a reliable technique for generating long alphanumeric codes - It would be nice if I could generate Microsoft style serial numbers, something of the form:

AB2345-123AB-123AB-12AB5-1AB45

I will be storing the codes in a table,

Any pointers/techniques appreciated.

Jon Harris

That's a GUID, and Lasso's lasso_uniqueID tag switched to using them at some point, maybe Lasso 9?

He did specify 8.6 in the subject line. But, Mysql can also create GUIDs. You could let Mysql hand you the id when you create the record that holds the voucher info.

RE: Voucher Codes [LP8.6]

Jon Harris
Hi Jolle/Marc/Bil

Yes, I am using 8.6 with MySQL.

I think the UUID approach will work fine.

I won't bother adding a check digit as I have done before, as either the voucher exists in the table or it doesn't -  I don't need to validate the code with this application.

I would prefer to have the code before the record-write, so I will adopt the tag approach.

Thanks for the replies.

Kind regards
jon
