Video

Marc Pinnell-3
Hey all,

Received a call from a prospective client today. The type of site he is looking for will be heavy on video and data interaction with said video. No just dropping in YouTube video embed codes here! It's kinda/sorta along these lines: https://www.dropcam.com/cloud_recording - but with more data interaction with the recorded video (can't really say too much here, NDAs and all that).

Why I am posting here is that video is outside my comfort zone and would be looking to hire/partner with someone to take this site on if we win the bid. It would be a large undertaking (I think), with a reasonable timeline (benchmark/alpha in late January/February) and probably some ongoing work as well as he wants it scaleable.

Please email me directly if you have experience with video processing and would be interested.

Marc

I've messed with video uploads before it's a massive and expensive undertaking. Better to use something like brightcove.

Hey Marc

Take a look at http://applications.grandchallenges.ca

Note: The public video streaming and voting side of Round 6 is only live for another few days (till Nov 15th 1pm EST when this round closes and Round 7 funding application starts).
These are all stored and dealt with locally - no YouTube involved due to intellectual property issues. People don't quite realize just how much rights they give up when they post to YT, and this client cannot have that happen, so we deal with everything ourselves.

During the application round the applicant uploads the video as part of the whole application process, and it's transcoded using a third party system, and then we use HTML5 with Flash fallback for playback. The encoding service delivers back to us the videos sized correctly and in specific formats.

The system has been cranking successive rounds of this now for a couple of years and have virtually no user upload or playback issues reported any more. It's not a lightly used system either.
Round 6 had 890 *eligible* applicants, and many more who applied but not eligible :)
When the application timeframe closes, then the public gets to vote on the eligible applications - and many of these are coming from LMIC countries (WHO defined low and middle-income countries) so have certain bandwidth challenges, and the streaming has to cope with that too. The system gets hit pretty hard close to deadline (as it is now).

Let me know if you want to talk more about how it's handled. You know my AIM :)

IIRC Rich Fortnum did a pretty amazing video site a while back.  You might
hit him up.

Hi Marc,

We have a similar requirement to be developed very soon and we opted for https://vimeo.com/pro as it seemed to be the rough choice with some good documentation for APIs https://developer.vimeo.com/ - we want to avoid having the video hit our servers at all due to bandwidth concerns.

Our development is yet to commence but will be happy share as we get into the process

Very best regards,

Rick

Hi Deco,

Yes, that is my intention - will have to see how it all comes together.  We have the empty Vimeo account... just but have to get a start on the development in the next couple of weeks.

Very best regards,

Rick
