Upgrade from 8.5x to 8.6 (Mac) results

Jim Sheffer-3
Hey everyone-

I just wanted to post for those out there unsure about upgrading to Lasso 8.6 (I'm one of those that "Dreads"(with a capitol D!) upgrades!).

Although we were moving to a new server at the same time so we did a clean install, I'm happy to report that everything went without a hitch!
No problems with compatibility in our code either!

+1. Before I upgraded my CentOS server I was restarting Lasso every couple of days (or less!). I haven't had to do a restart since because of problems. It has been so nice and I can finally sleep easy at night. The only issue I have found so far is the decimal issue popping up in random places, but nothing mission critical (fingers crossed) so far.

Great job, LassoSoft!

You've been lucky, my experience is not so good. Did a clean install first, in the sense of uninstalling the older version first, and it just turned In to a mess after installing 8.6 of even slower email send than before coupled with much higher CPU use when emails were in queue.
I finally did a truly clean reinstall, OS and Lasso 8.6, and manually reapplied all settings.
CPU issue went away and email send speed is better, about one each three seconds, about half of what I had before.
But I was suddenly and immediately bitten by the DNS deafness bug, which now strikes about once every other day. On a completely newly minted server.

But the worst experience I am sad to say was with the Lasso support through all of this. They were eager to help at first but the interest quickly faded without any communication about why. They just stopped answering my emails. I really thought they wanted to hunt down the DNS deafness bug, but now I think they just can't stand dealing with 8.6 issues any more and just want to work on L9.

What DNS servers are you using?

I use 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4 with much success.

I've tested the DNS setup and speed with Namebech and am using the quickest. Got nothing do do with that.

Ok, just got off the phone with Rachel Guthrie, and now I feel very reassured! Turns out Lassosoft is very much on the job and on the ball! Just a glitch in the communication, I guess.

To be clear, LassoSoft support have continued to work on 8.x email issues, and had come to a halt with the specific investigations on Lars environment. We turned to look at parallel issues hoping to find the solution to Lars's problem in the process, and this is where we did fail him and cease regular communication that we were still actively investigating.

We apologize unreservedly.

We do not leave our customers high and dry with an operational issue like this.
We have also negotiated and secured some external expert input on email from the father of Lasso email, Fletcher Sandbeck, and we are doing everything possible to work on these issues. Contrary to the Lasso 9 being the cause of delay unfortunately resolving these issues is to the detriment of the next Lasso 9 update that we were ready to test.

LassoSoft does, and will continue to, actively support Lasso 8.5 and 8.6 users.

I am always available to discuss any concerns on the numbers listed below.

Lars-

sorry you had so much trouble!

We were actually (I think it may have been the DNS issue but I've heard that wasn't addressed in this version so maybe not) getting hit where all of the sudden Lasso would take 150%+ of the CPU and all of the memory before the upgrade.  Now we have all the memory in the world (Of course we went from 2GB to 8GB RAM on a mac mini) and CPU running an average of 21%!

Re: Upgrade from 8.5x to 8.6 (Mac) results

Laurent-40
We are running Lasso 8.5.6 on Mac OSX server 10.5.8 on MacPro, 16Gig of
RAM. Our main website is serving more than 1.5 million pages a month and
about 700Gig of traffic.
Not main issue, except some time to time CPU spikes, and workaround by
restarting Lasso service. We'd like to upgrade to Lasso 8.6. Since the
website is in production, we do not want to have to reinstall the Mac OS.
Should we be aware of something?

Re: Upgrade from 8.5x to 8.6 (Mac) results

Jonathan Guthrie-3
Hi Laurent, you don't need to reinstall the OS.
As it's a higher volume production system I suggest making sure you have a complete backup of your settings, even down to duplicating the entire Lasso Professional app directory onto a flash drive or network volume.

Also I suggest testing your code (and the upgrade process) on a parallel system.

I presume you are aware of the decimal precision change?

Thanks

Jono

Re: Upgrade from 8.5x to 8.6 (Mac) results

I don't exactly see how decimal change can affect us. Is there any issue
with custom tags?

Re: Upgrade from 8.5x to 8.6 (Mac) results

Jonathan Guthrie-3
In certain situations (mainly eCom) the default output of a decimal was displaying with a few too many decimal places under 8.6 because of a bug fix. This behaviour was different to earlier versions of 8.x.

I only mention it because some of the other upgrades ran into this - if you're not relying on decimal precision in your web apps then you're not likely to be affected :)

Thanks

Jono

With respect to the decimal changes, tech note is here: http://www.lassosoft.com/Lasso-8_6_0_1-release-notes

Re: Upgrade from 8.5x to 8.6 (Mac) results

gzasuwa
In reply to this post by Jim Sheffer-3
I was not so lucky.  8.5.6 has been running for a couple 3 years with just a memory hog issue.  Never any crashes.  After the update to 8.6.0.1, system has been crashing randomly but mostly when I am in the ServerAdmin setup screens.  Lasso tech support is trying to debug my SQLite files to see if there is a problem there or not.  I hate crashes since this is a production server and I can not afford any instability.

Crashlog in /Applications/Lasso Professional
>8/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Lasso8Service.crash.log

is blank and no errors are reported in the Lasso ERRORS tabs on the server or SiteAdmin panels.  Right now just STUMPED :(

Anyone else see this after they upgraded?
