Excellent tips Fletcher. However, I would point to this
article regarding the relevance of meta keywords:

http://searchenginewatch.com/sereport/article.php/2165061

Apparently only Inktomi continues to support the use of
the meta keyword tag, which many engines like Google have
never supported at all.

I can verify that Google uses the meta description.  I made a mistake
and outputted a bunch of bad code into my meta descriptions and the
next time my site was indexed the bad code appeared in most of my
google search results.  Whether that effects indexing or not, I don't
know, but it sure looked bad in their search results which would
impact whether someone clicks or not.

Hi Fletcher,

Great article in regard to Search Engine Optimization and submittal. One
thing I want to comment on is the reciprocal links. That has become a huge
way to help your ranking in the engines. It is a tedious task, but doing a
search for places to link to, whether they want a reciprocal link or not,
make a page on your site for links. Try to link to your site to as many
places as you find, and if the ones that require a reciprocal link have
things pertaining to your site (i.e. If you sell organic shampoo), then you
might want to find other vegan, organic, or all natural sites to have
reciprocal links to. It will dramatically help your rankings, just remember
it may take anywhere from 60 to 90 days for you to see a difference in
rankings. Also, due to the way the engines "spider" sites, in any one given
day, you may find your site for instance in Google, and see your site
ranking  at 5 on the first page, then later that day see it ranked at 15 on
the 2nd page. Do not let that concern you, it is just the way the
"spidering" works, then after about 90 days, you will see your site more
"stable" staying about the same in ranking from day to day. You do need do
resubmit your site about every 30 days, which also continues to keep your
site where you would like it in rankings. Meta-tags keywords, description,
alt Tags, and comment tags are very important and definitely need to be on
each page of your site. Like Fletcher said, the tags also need to pertain to
text, and topics on the page they are on, to be effective.
I hope this helps a little, and gives you more information to help your
ranking in the search engines.

Best regards and thanks Fletcher for all of your great tips,

Rhia Steele

The article I referenced only discussed the meta keywords
tag, not the description.
