The Importance of Backwards Compatibility

stevepiercy
http://www.lassosoft.com/Importance-of-Backwards-Compatibility

I submitted the Knop demo to Rachel.
http://code.google.com/p/knop/downloads/detail?name=Knop%20demo%20package%202008-09-24.zip&can=2&q=

I offered to provide LS with my code to test further.

Please let [hidden email] know how much you want Knop to
be ported to Lasso 9.

Thank you.

Re: The Importance of Backwards Compatibility

Peter D Bethke
I've been a little out of the loop on Knop, Steve - have you created an LP9 version of Knop, or are  you running the 8.x version through 9 to expose the compatibility issues?

Re: The Importance of Backwards Compatibility

stevepiercy
There is a partially ported L9 branch of Knop.
http://code.google.com/p/knop/source/browse/#svn%2Fbranches

Jolle, Tim, Amtac folks have been instrumental in this, but I
have not.

I tried running Knop 8.x code through 9 and it bombed, and I
never investigated.  The timing to do anything about it was not
good.  Perhaps now with LS committing resources to the issue, it
may be worth participating in this time.

Re: The Importance of Backwards Compatibility

Peter D Bethke
I'm facing a similar temptation with my own Knoppish framework - heavily ctyped. I just _know_ its gonna barf in 9 though out of the gate, and because of my slavish reliance on nested includes its gonna be a nightmare to debug.

Re: The Importance of Backwards Compatibility

Depending on how and where you nest includes, it might not be.
The debug stack in 9 is really nice.

Suggest just having a go and see what barfs to find out firsthand.

Thanks for doing this Steve! Not to neglect the huge efforts made by Jolle and Amtac to port Knop to 9 native, but it's obviously a huge benefit if old code "just works".
