SortRandom issues

Kevin Black-2
I'm running into a rather odd problem.

Here's my inline code:

[inline: -database='database', -table='table', -maxRecords='2', -sortRandom, -search] ... [/inline]

With the '-sortRandom' in my inline, nothing shows. Without it everything seems to pull properly. However, I want to randomize the results amount all the records found. I've tried with and without '-maxRecords'. It seems '-sortRandom' is broken somehow.

I'm using Lasso 8.5.4 with FileMaker Server 10.

Any ideas what's wrong?

Re: SortRandom issues

Trevor Borgmeier
maybe try -findall instead of search?

What database are you querying? MySQL? FileMaker?

Re: SortRandom issues

Trevor Borgmeier
Just noticed you said FM 10... I was going to suggest using a SQL
statement to do the randomizing if you were running MySQL, but I'm not
familiar enough with FM anymore.

I'm using Lasso 8.5.4 with FileMaker Server 10 hosting a FileMaker database.

I tried the '-findAll' also, but still comes up empty.

Yeah, I do think this is a FileMaker issue. Here's the error I get when I test for the error:

Error while performing FileMaker database -findall action. Command is invalid (for example, a Set Field script step does not have a calculation specified).

Re: SortRandom issues

Kevin Black-2
Okay, from what I can tell, FileMaker doesn't support this feature. It says it's an invalid command.

So, does anyone know of a way to get a random order and then select just two from that order?

Re: SortRandom issues

Kevin Black-2
Well, currently it's only four (4) records, but it can grow as the client adds more.

I've decided to add a simple FM script that randomizes numbers in a number field. Then I just take the first two that come up. Seems to work for now.

I've used that approach before with success.

Right -

-sortrandom is for non Filemaker DBs.  Instead use -random.  To get one random record use -random, -maxrecords=1

Re: SortRandom issues

This does work except it only shows one record no matter how many I set to the '-maxRecords'. I tried 2, 3 and 4 and only one (1) record came up, but it was indeed random.

Re: SortRandom issues

Doug Gentry-2
Oh - didn't realize you needed more than 1. Then the earlier solution using a calculated field seems best.
