Related Fields not always working

Chris Keller-3
Web Platform: OS X Server 10.4.11 Running WebStar 5.4.1 and Lasso 8.5.6

FM Server Platform: OS X Server 10.5.8 Running FM Server 10.0.2.206

Related fields can be displayed but when I try to use a related field
to search the primary file or try to update these related fields, get
an error 102.

Checked permissions, user in question has Full Access.

Removed all related fields, process works. Add any one back, fails.

Created new layout, no change.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I enjoy Lasso when it works but troubleshooting is...

Re: Related Fields not always working

From the LP Language Guide Appendix A under FM error codes:

102 Field is missing.

Also note the following, also from the LPLG:

    Fields from a related record are named with the related database
    name, two colons, and the name of the field (e.g. [Field:
    'Calls::Approved']).

Re: Related Fields not always working

Chris Keller-3
Thank you, Yep, that's correct.

And what is stranger is that related fields will display but can't be
updated or used in searches.

Oh and the update does have the keyvalue provided.

Re: Related Fields not always working

Chris Keller-3
Ok, maybe this is the issue.

Should I be using the TO version of the field name relative to the
table in the Inline?

Carts.Cust::Email is the field that is giving the trouble but
Carts.Cust is not a table in Lasso,
it's a TO for Carts which IS a table.

Is that an issue? It wasn't in pre FM 7 versions.

I know what I am doing is small and stupid (lack of knowledge) but
can't find the flash in info needed to get over this
hurdle.

It looks like a period is not valid in a TO name in Lasso?

I removed the period and it seemed to work

Is this documented anywhere? It worked in prior versions.

Oh and only in certain cases, display is fine.

Re: Related Fields not always working {Solved?]

maxwellk2
Hi Chris,

Sounds like you got it working, but portals in FileMaker can be challenging. See the Lasso 8.5 Language Guide starting on page 178. And yes, a period in the TO name won't work, periods are reserved for updating specific rows, quoted from the Language Guide:

        "For example, the field name for the Call_Duration field in the Calls.fp5 database on the record with ID 1234 would look like Calls.fp5::Call_Duration.1234 and could be generated with Calls.fp5::Call_Duration.[Field: 'Calls.fp5::Call_Duration', -RecordID]."

Grabbing a single field from a related TO with the '::' method isn't all that bad, but If you need to work with portals in the future it is recommended to call the child table directly with nested inlines. Steve Piercy gave this example in a similar post:

http://www.listsearch.com/Lasso/Thread/index.lasso?21062

> // Find one record on the layout
> inline(-inlinename='layout', -blah blah blah, -maxrecords = 1, -search);
> records;
> // Set a variable to this layout's field used in the portal relationship
> var('my_record' = field('current_layout_field_name'));
> // pass that to the inner inline, where the values in the related field in the portal match the value of the single found record on the master layout.
> inline(-inlinename='portal',
> 'related_table_related_field_name' = $my_record,
> -blah blah blah,

Re: Related Fields not always working {Solved?]

Johan Solve
In reply to this post by Chris Keller-3
Yes, this is because FileMaker uses period to address a specific
iteration of a portal (or was it repeated field?), as in "fieldname.2"
to address the second repetition.

There was a thread about this issue in 2009.
http://listsearch.com/Lasso/Thread/index.lasso?22071#246595

---
Periods in field names is covered on page 95 in the "FileMaker Server
9 Custom Web Publishing with XML and XSLT" manual
http://www.filemaker.com/downloads/pdf/fms9_cwp_xslt_en.pdf

Field names can contain periods, with the following exceptions:
- The period cannot be followed by a number. For example, myfield.9 is
an invalid field name.
- The period cannot be followed by the text string op (the two letters
“op”). For example, myfield.op is
an invalid field name.
- The period cannot be followed by the text string global (the word
“global”). For example, myfield.global is an invalid field name.
