RE: Printing bar codes from Filemaker/Lasso to a remote web browser

Hi Spongebob,

Following up on Jolle's response, creating a PDF to send to the printer gives you great control and we have done this with Dymo print labels and specialised medical labels using standard 1-D Barcodes and 2-D QR2id Codes.

Were you needing the output to be sent directly to the printer?  If so, we start to walking into an Operating System and permissions minefield, as it sounds like you need the printing to happen on the client side - doable, yes, but we will need to know a lot more to be able to help you.

Taking what others have provided, can you advise what operating systems are in use on the client side and how you would expect it to work? Are the formats always the same?  Is the Dymo Label writer  the only printer attached? Is it a USB connection or a networked printer through a print server?

Very best regards,

Rick

I have a small layout, which shows the barcode to be printed. Its got just the right format for my labelwriter labels and took me a while to set up.

Id rather do this via a webbrowser.

Hi Spongebob,

In addition to the suggestions already made by Jolle and Rick, you could also take a look at the jZebra project (http://code.google.com/p/jzebra/) or its commercial twin brother QZ (http://qzindustries.com). Basically it's a Java .jar application served by Apache (or any other http server) for raw printing of web content including bar codes (using the navitive printer language like ESC/POS) on your local printer. I'm currently working on a jZebra based solution that prints Lasso generated bar codes from the browser on a local Epson receipt printer. The first results are quite promising and extremely fast. The guy behind QZ is extremely helpful.

Thanks, Alfred.

That looks interesting for an application we have coming up in a while.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on in production with this.

Very best regards,

Rick
