I don't have one.  I hear they make good sushi serving trays,
but lousy door stops.

One of my clients wanted something that could check email,
browse the web, view proofs of artwork, play games, video
conference, remote desktop control.  They wanted to buy another
iPad.  I told them to buy two ChromeBooks for the same price AND
it includes a hardware keyboard so they don't have to poke
around on the iOS software keyboard abomination.

BTW, there's a new mac mini.  :P

Hi Tami,

I use my iPad for:
- browsing
- email
- photos & video - it's better than my old phone and much nicer to view on and show to others (and less intrusive than shoving a laptop in their faces)
- books - I've come to love reading on my iPad and have enjoyed exploring all the classics without having to ever be charge for overdue library books (the bane of my existence)
- music
- facetime (occasionally)
- website/ websystem testing
- checking tv shows / movie times
- recipes
- and of course - gaming while waiting to pick kids up from various places... or Jono from his latest trip to hospital ;)
- I know Jono has SSH and VNC on his to connect to servers and have remote control
pretty much everything I'd use a laptop for, but don't want to have to use two hands to hold / carry / move everytime I change where I'm sitting or standing.

Re: [OT] what do you use your iPad for?

Jewett, Greg
Tami -

I am glad that someone replied in the positive tone, which encouraged me to add my two-cents.

My operandi has been varied over time as I use my iPad.  I have gone from the original to a iPad 2.  I have not yet upgraded to the 3 or a mini yet, but I think that is down the road, or other family members.

My boys use my original one as a gaming system and school work reference (not allowed to use Dads).  It has put up with some abuse, but handling it well.

Initially I was using it for notes, and the plethora of apps available and reference (knots, DIY projects, etc..).  I love the photos - and has Rachel said, it is great for show off pictures - better than my phone or laptop (especially with the HDMI and video out dongle), I can hook it up to just about any TV and play movies, slideshows, or blow up a game or FaceTime.

I use Evernote<https://evernote.com/> extensively and now along with Penultimate<https://evernote.com/penultimate/> (hand written notes sync'd with Evernote<https://evernote.com/>) and Skitch.  I have started to use a stylus for hand-written notes, but usually I do not use the stylus (not needed), to pull up notes, add information (copy and paste) and using the on screen keyboard (in landscape mode) to type.  I am not as efficient using the iPad on-screen keyboard, but I have gotten pretty darn fast and it keeps up with me.

I have recently started reading more and love that I can use Nook, Kindle, Apple iBooks, FreeBooks, and so many others that I have not found any void in possible reading material.  I love the customization mode (lighting levels, background colors, etc.. easy on the eyes in different environments).

The best thing of them all - it is a stable and reliable tool that I carry with me just about everywhere (home, work, play, etc..)

I know musicians who are using iPads for sheet music.  Once the sheet music is scanned in any song can be called up and it sits on a normal music stand.

I'd mostly use the iPad as a video player and web browser or gaming machine.  I love the way Numbers operates on the iPad, but I tend to use my laptop during the day so I end up using Numbers there for the most part.  Just about any app that is good on the iPhone is better on the iPad.

In practice though I use my iPhone more often for remote server work simply because I don't have the iPad with me.

I held off buying an iPad for some time as I didn't really see the point. Then I bought a Nexus 7 as I decided I'd try a tablet but the iPad was too big (the iPad mini was announced about two weeks later – I'm sure we all have similar stories wrt less than stellar timings).

The Nexus 7 and I never got on that well. It was OK but more of a toy.

Recently I bought S.O. an iPhone and I got jealous so bought myself an iPad mini at the same time.

I use the iPad for lot of little tasks on an ad hoc basis: checking phone numbers, diary, taking photographs, logging into servers (ssh and VNC), etc, etc. However, the real key uses are:

- Read email when I shouldn't (when looking at a computer would get me in trouble. Typically in the evening)

- To read books briefly before nodding off at night

- Take notes. And this is the killer app for me. I'm trying to wean myself of my notebook and, to a certain extent it's working quite well. Note Taker HD in conjunction with a stylus. Each note automatically is date and time stamped and the title is easily viewable in "browse" mode. There's a bit of a learning curve with Note Taker HD but it seems to suit me quite well.

The freebie app "Bamboo Paper" is quite fun too. I've used that a couple of times to annotate pictures.

All in all, I'm quite happy with the iPad mini – and this from someone who didn't really see the point in tablets.

What app do most of you use for remote server work on the iphone/ipad?

I use mine for web surfing, email checking, poker playing, and
basketball stat tracking for my son's AAU team.

For SSH I prefer Prompt.
It's by Panic, the same guys that do Coda and Transmit.

I like that one as well.  I've used a couple others, but Prompt seems great.

Re: [OT] what do you use your iPad for?

In reply to this post by Marc Vos
I love my iPad 2, and when I dropped it recently - many months out of warranty and no Apple Care, I was happy to pay $200 to have Apple arrange to ship my broken one and replace it with a new one of the same model, complete with personalized etching - all within a week.

To me, iPad is largely a read, rather than write, device. There are various work arounds in terms of input, and of course most iPad apps require screen swipes or keystrokes, but conceptually I see it as something I take information from.  And it's beauty is that it makes it easier for me to do so in more places, even compared to my MacBook Air. I don't have the G3 version/plan, figuring my iPhone can be my lifeline to the Internet if I'm outside a hotspot.

But hotspots or no I love having a dozen books in my Kindle app while driving across Nevada. I used to have a tote bag of reading material for long car trips.  And at home my iPad is usually on a side table in the living room and I can plop down and access email, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

As a teacher it's been a super tool. I have a DropBox account for all my University files. So I can work on lesson plans on my laptop or my school office computer, tuck my iPad under my arm and arrive in the classroom with every document updated and ready to use.

And while I was serving on our city's citizen budget committee we would get one of those 3 inch binders, with all the supporting info. Those were available in PDFs and I walked into every meeting with my iPad and not my binder.

It truly is my buddy.

…Doug

[OT] are you storing anything in iCloud

Do any of you use iCloud so that your mail/contacts/etc are in sync between your iphone/ipad/laptop?

IF you do use iCloud what are you storing in the cloud?   Any issues?

Thanks in advance.

I use iCloud since it's there (me.com before), but mainly for Mail, Contacts, Calendar and since this year, also for iTunes Match.
Rarely for some Pages or Numbers documents.

I'm using it because it is easy (not always the best answer, but... less technical overhead for me in supporting family). I use it for contacts and calendar mainly. Also iTunes match, but finding that is a bit of a pain since I never have any music on my phone!
