[OT] anyone interested in doing a free webinar

Tami Williams-3

Anyone interested in doing a webinar?

Anyone interested in attending a webinar on a particular topic?

I need topics.  I need presenters.  Depending on the topic - I'll do
the presentation and demo files myself.

I'm also offering my capabilities as host and archive to anyone out
there who has a something they want to present.

The webinar would be hosted by me via WebEx, on a Weds or Thurs at 1pm
EST, and recorded.  Demo files would be given to webinar participants
and the recording would be available for the public at http://www.asktami.com/training.html
.

So, think about it and let me know.

Re: [OT] anyone interested in doing a free webinar

Roddie Grant
Hi Tami

Not perhaps a typical "topic" but I'd be interested in watching one of the
leading coders (Bil?) program a custom tag, not so much for the actual code,
but to watch the process.

It could be a fairly simple problem (return the date for Easter Sunday for a
given year, for example). The presenter would have to think aloud as they
went so that attendees could see how the presenter approaches the problem:
defining the need, working out an algorithm, naming variables, development
and testing etc.

As a self-taught programmer I feel one of the things I've missed is where
the apprentice sits beside the master and asks lots of questions. The manual
and the wonderful support on LassoTalk teaches you the mechanics, but that's
not the same as watching a master at work.

For a more conventional topic, something *beyond the basics* of custom types
would be helpful. I write custom types, but the way I use them always seems
a little untidy. For example, sometimes I can't decide whether a custom tag
within a type should return a value or set the value of (self->whatever)? So
it's perhaps the deployment and use of custom types rather than the basic
concept.

Please stick with Lasso 8.x. It's going to be a long time before I even
consider moving to 9.

HTH

Roddie:

I might be interested in putting something together on this. Lets discuss it a bit further to make sure I'm on the same page with what you are looking for before I start putting a presentation together.

Great! Are you thinking of the "Watch the master work" or the custom types
(or both!)?

custom types with the thought and decision process as the basis for the presentation.

Re: [OT] anyone interested in doing a free webinar

For anyone interested in presenting, your presentation can be any
length - 45 min, 30 min, 15 min, 10 min, 5 min.

Also, I think it would be great to have code samples that you walk
through and run in the browser - that code would be what attendees
receive.

It looks like there'll be a webinar on Custom Types, mostly about the
decision process sometime in early October.  Presented by Tim Taplin!
Thanks Tim!

Will keep you updated.

Thanks for doing this.  You might consider touching on what code is a good candidate for ctags/ctypes, and once you've created it, how to test/debug it including the odd corner-cases to make the tag robust.  Also, I've found most people new to coding ctags tend to get tripped up by the pass-by-reference default.

An advanced "class" might cover -privileged flag and when to use it (including security considerations), and coding ctags that safely interact with global vars (i.e. thread locks).
