[OT] Syncin' up

Adam de Zoete
Hi all,

I have a client which i'm developing for who wants to sync their office
running Win 2003 Pro Server/LP8/mySQL to an host online with any OS/LP8/
mySQL. I'm in the UK and the extent of Lasso hosts over here seems to
have dismissed over the past years - certainly on the Omnipilot website!

I need some way of exactly the same databases between a host and their
server. Am I looking at mySQL replication or anyone know any other
options available to me?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Adam

If you add both MySQL hosts to one copy of Lasso then you can just synch the data from host to host periodically.  For example, on the office computer you'd add the online MySQL host to Lasso.  Then, schedule an event to periodically copy all of the data from the local copy of MySQL to the remote copy (or perform a more complex two-way synch).

Just thinking aloud...

Are you needing real time synchronization or just scheduled syncs?

Real time would either need MySQL replication (with one DB set as
Master and the other slave) or a Lasso scripted solution.
Scheduled syncing could probably be handled by a cron script that
grabbed a dump, ftp to other machine and then import the dump into
second machine's DB. Since you are Windows on one end, it would
probably be a mix of cron (unix) and vbasic scripts (is that the
windows equivalent?)

If you want real simple, just use a MySQL front end like CocoaMySQL
(mac) or MySQLphpadmin to do dumps and imports manually.

Why not give the guys at www.anu.net/ a call and see what they suggest.

FWIW,
Paul

Thanks for your responses.

I'm looking at real time. How would you suggest I script a solution?

I think Fletcher's solution is great but not sure whether it accomplishes
exactly what i'm after.

Here's what i'm looking for:

Hosting company - Consists of a few websites, one large mySQL database
and loads of custom built admin stuff.

Office - running an exact image of all at the hosting company. All the
admin will actually be performed on the office network, but sync'd to the
hosting company for statistics on the websites.

The situation is that the office is more likely to go down than the
hosting company. So I would like the hosting company to be the master.

Any syncin' suggestions?

Many thanks,

Adam
