Lasso tutorials and exercises

French, Shelane
I'm going to be getting a couple of new developers for my team. They are
currently PL/SQL developers. Mostly it's just been me doing the Lasso
development here. So I'm looking to see if anyone has tutorials or even
just programming exercises that can be applied to Lasso that I can use for
training my team. I have a new internal site that I've created that has
links to Lasso references (language guide, LassoSoft technical articles,
etc) as well as development tools that I use. I do plan on trying to come
up with some of my own as well and would be glad to share once they're
ready.

In reply to this post by French, Shelane
Hi Shelane,

Ignore the previous one - my finger tapped where it shouldn't ...

My advice from experience.. no book.

I tried to start a book in 2011 and then my son came along and I found out that a book is not working - only good for hands-on solutions and reference. So I quit the writing of the book.

I gave him the code of an internal site of mine and the Lasso reference page - and myself as knowledge bank; exactly what you are doing now. And that worked perfectly, and he had not coded anything before; just some Java at school. After a few weekends he already worked alone. Since then he picked up jQuery too.

So, since these newbie's already know how to code (I suppose), Lasso is just plain easy and they'll learn it quite fast then; also since you can be their knowledge base. A book just takes too long.

Re: Lasso tutorials and exercises

French, Shelane
I certainly wasn't not thinking of writing a book. I hate to write. I'm
writing the style guide right now and I even hate that.

I was just thinking of types of exercises that would give an experienced
developer an idea of how certain concepts would be done with Lasso.

Re: Lasso tutorials and exercises

Marc Vos
I know you didn't plan to write - I thought you were looking for a book.

The exercises are best taken from real world problems, aka a real live site that needs modification. That's how I taught my son to code in Lasso - I simply copied the site for him and gave him the todo's for that project and evaluated every week. During evaluation, we discussed how things are done differently in Lasso.

Shelane:

its for Lasso 8 and FIleMaker 7 but you could take a look at the manual for the Lasso Master Class at http://www.briandunning.com/lasso-training/.
PDF of manual + Exercises cost $99.
PDF of manual  only costs $59.

Re: Lasso tutorials and exercises

Peter D Bethke
If you can dig up Duncan Cameron's book on Lasso 5 it might help a bit - maybe on Amazon. Really dated obviously but syntactically would get the idea across (I mean it _was_ reviewed by Fletcher, and the chapters on Regex are pretty helpful :). I have a copy somewhere for old time's sake. Ah, those were the days :)

Re: Lasso tutorials and exercises

French, Shelane
I actually have the book :-) from yesteryears past. I also found the
"examples pack" that was once available for download.

By the way LassoSoft, the Getting Started guide for 8.6 says you can
download the file here (but it's a 404):
http://download.lassosoft.com/pub/ExamplesPack/ExamplesPack.zip

OK. Thumbing through the book and I had to really laugh out loud as one of
the examples said "Cathy Cunningham."

Re: Lasso tutorials and exercises

Lubos Voros
In reply to this post by French, Shelane
This problem I also had. Information sources for Lasso is very low.
Documentation (reference Lasso) web LassoSoft is incomplete,
respectively. half empty. It's hard to do something when you have to
speculate.
What helped us is to choose people who know technology, such as HTTP
sessions, SQL, Unix, etc. It is very important. Lasso is a tool that
connects to each other. Without the experience and knowledge of
environment and technology will be any middle ware useless.
