Lasso Error :(

Patrick Larkin-3
Hi again -

Out of the blue, my main site is going down constantly with this error:
Lasso Error

Lasso Connector could not communicate with Lasso Service.
Connection timed out.

I see in the Error tab, I get issues all of a sudden connecting to my external MySQL database.  All of the Lasso functional databases are using the built in database.

What is this error telling me and why would it spring up all of a sudden?  The site is normal and fast for a few clicks and then on the next it just sits there and then gives the error.

I’m really now sure how to attack this.  I’m slowly moving stuff to a different SQL server because I have no idea what to do.

Re: Lasso Error :(

Bil Corry-3
It usually means Lasso Service crashed or hung.  Not sure if it's related
to the connection to your MySQL db.

Maybe LassoService is just really busy and isn't responding within the
timeout limit?

Do any other applications access the MySQL? Could it be that a bot is overwhelming your MySQL servers? I would use a MySQL monitor and leave it running so you can see what is happening when it crashes.

This has been a school district server for 10+ years and we never had a performance issue.

Ever since I added a Filemaker 17 host, tried to query it for databases, and ultimately removed the host, it has been doing this.

Is there something in the internal databases I hosed up?

The MySQL server never crashes. Nothing else access it.

I was only reacting to the SQL server because of the errors in the Lasso admin about timing out.

I should add that Lasso is now running on a Windows VM for several years without issue.  I always ran it on Mac servers before.

I’m not even sure where to find logs or diagnostic info on Windows regarding Lasso. :(

Could be that MySQL number of connections is too low and/or the connections are not closing quick enough. Take a look at my.cnf file.

The error in the Lasso > SiteAdmin > Utility > Errors that shows up is

Message: MySQLDS failed connecting to MySQL. errno=1040 "Too many connections”

But like I said, never an issue before.  Its almost as if the box stops responding, builds up a bunch of requests and then logs the error.  It hasn’t logged the error in 2 hours but its still happening every few minutes.

Re: Lasso Error :(

Tim Taplin
Might be worth double checking the logging on the mysql server. Sometimes the server can fill up its drive with log files, cause the server to bog or begin to lose connections, either of which could cause the described issue. Less likely but possible would be a memory issue.

Also, if you connect with a tool like Sequel Pro or Mysql Workbench you can view the current connections to see if that report is correct, and potentially investigate which connections are hanging around too long.

"Too many connections" means MySQL has connections that are not active, but
held open probably because Lasso died.  Here's some advice I gave about a
decade ago that I dug up:

The idea is to have enough connections that you won't exhaust them all, and
to short the timeout so that MySQL closes those connections sooner rather
than later.

Are you using IIS or Apache?  I found Apache on Windows worked much better
with Lasso.

Thanks.

I guess I really need to find out why Lasso is dying.  The server is under no additional load, we’ve increased the memory. It is giving an S channel error in the event viewer too. Probably unrelated.

Re: Lasso Error :(

Bil Corry-3
If you search for the error, you'll see it has come up for Windows / IIS a
few times over the years, with the prevailing advice to solve the issue
that is crashing Lasso.  Might be the SQLite DB is corrupted, maybe you can
try repairing it, or restoring from a backup (or worst case, delete it and
setup Lasso from scratch).

Also check the mysql log for slow queries, and if it is not
enabled, then enable it with a reasonable number, say 1-5 seconds.

This identified a few queries for which I needed to add an index
or needed to adjust to improve performance.  When queries are
slow, they can consume resources, users become impatient,
resubmit, and then compound the issue surprisingly quickly.

Re: Lasso Error :(

Patrick Larkin-3
Turns out my issue was a Filemaker 12 server which still serviced three small applications went rogue and apparently killed the Lasso service intermittently.

As soon as I disabled it, the server works like a charm.  This AFTER I completely rebuilt a new Lasso VM and moved a large portion of MySQL databases to a new server. It worked great until someone clicked on a page that queried that Filemaker system.

I think my days of serving Filemaker content is over.  Thanks for the help - its good to know there are still some of us left out there.

I should add for posterity that last week I added a Barracuda backup agent to that Mac FileMaker Pro server.  I think thats what killed it.
