Lasso 9, FMSA, and ODBC

Carl Ketterling
Does anyone have a VERY simple guide for how to get Lasso 9 to connect
to FMSA via ODBC?  I'd like to try this out, but I can't figure out...
...if FMSA and Lasso have to be on the same server
...if not, which server has to have ODBC drivers installed
...which server needs ODBC Administrator
...or maybe just what I'm doing wrong that I can't add an ODBC data source.

I have searched the archives, but I can't find the steps I'm looking for.

Carl

FM is not known for its concise documentation, so you will have
to dig for the information.

The LS article (where you commented) contains information about
getting Lasso to work with FM after FM has been configured to
use ODBC:
http://www.lassosoft.com/Connecting-Lasso-and-FileMaker-via-ODBC

The first sentence starts you down the rabbit hole:

     Please see
http://www.filemaker.com/support/technologies/odbc.html for an
overview of FileMaker versions which support ODBC.

The last row on that page has what you need, with a link to a
good summary:

Using an ODBC or JDBC client running on a remote client, I
want to submit
SQL queries or statements to a FileMaker Pro database.

FileMaker Pro as a Data Source
     http://www.filemaker.com/12help/en/html/odbc.19.1.html <--
FINALLY!  HERE IT IS!

     FileMaker Server Advanced

Then turn left at the Dairy Queen, go three miles, do the hokey
pokey, and turn yourself around, that's what it's all about!

Thanks for that, but it appears to be only for FileMaker Pro and not
FileMaker Server Advanced.

I have set up FMSA to share a file with ODBC following instructions in
the FMSA documentation.

I have Lasso on a separate machine and want to ad FMSA as an ODBC datasource.

Which of those machines do I need to run ODBC Administrator on?

Re: Lasso 9, FMSA, and ODBC

Ke Carlton-3
The ODBC client driver needs to be installed on the system running
Lasso (the client).

A system wide DSN needs also needs to created on that system (using
ODBC administrator or similar if OSX) — simply configure it to point
to FMSA according to Filemaker's documentation.

From there configure Lasso to access that DSN according to the docs —
it doesn't care if it's Filemaker or not.

Re: Lasso 9, FMSA, and ODBC

Carl Ketterling
Thanks, and I have that.

Now in Lasso, I add an ODBC host as 'localhost'?
If I leave out the port number, will it use a default?
The username/password is from my database, correct?
When I try what I think is the correct information, I get the following error:

SQLAPIDS failed connecting to ODBC: "IM002 [iODBC][Driver Manager]Data
source name not found and no default driver specified. Driver could not
be loaded
rc != SQL_SUCCESS"

Can you tell me what I've done wrong?

Carl

Re: Lasso 9, FMSA, and ODBC

Ke Carlton-3
The host should be the system DSN you specified when configuring the
client driver — the password etc are also generally configured on the
client driver / system DSN.

It's also worth checking that Lasso's ODBC datasource connector has
been loaded at startup — check the log.
