Lasso 9 + FMSA 11: FM datasource vs ODBC

Jonathan Guthrie-3
Hi all,

Thought I would share my findings for the benefit of those who use Lasso and FMSA.

While preparing some demos for next week I was setting up a unicode demo on a Mac Mini, 10.6 server, FMSA 11, Lasso 9.1.1
The test db has a bunch of data in it that is the same phrase in a number of different languages, and it's outputting a search to a page.

Set up to access the DB through the Lasso 9 FM datasource connector, 400ms
Set up to access the DB through the Lasso 9 ODBC datasource connector, 13ms

That's the same inline, just changing the datasource by toggling the datasource "aliases" FM vs ODBC

Note - those are not one-off times trying to make one look worse or better than the other, that's an average of a number of runs.

So the moral of the story is: If you are using FMSA and therefore can use ODBC, it might be worth checking out.

That's very interesting Jono. I did some tests long ago with very poor results via ODBC. Looking for better performance from FileMaker I bring this up with FMI employees every chance I get, about 2 years ago the last time I did. Since they confirmed XML is best I haven't tested ODBC since, but this is great news. Have there been a changes to the ODBC connector in L9?

I have a developer copy of FMSA 11 that allows 5 ODBC connections and will be testing this with L9 asap. Might make it worth the $900 (FBA) upgrade price from Server to Server Advanced (to enable ODBC) if testing confirms your findings.

Thanks,
Max

Re: Lasso 9 + FMSA 11: FM datasource vs ODBC

Jonathan Guthrie-3
Honestly, I am not sure about ODBC connections to FM from L8.6, and it's not quite in my task list to install 8.6 on that dev server right now :)

It honestly looks like FM via ODBC might be better than the XML route, but that's just in my initial testing.

I would love to get some metrics on a larger data set and more complex code, so if you have that then let me know, I can fire it up on this server and we can measure the difference.

FWIW I am going to be in San Diego next week for FM DevCon, if you or any Lasso developers are also attending, stop by our booth for a chat!

Thanks

Jono

Hi Jono,

Thanks for the info.  I'm running a similar setup.

Could you go into a little more detail regarding the following statement?:

"That's the same inline, just changing the datasource by toggling the datasource "aliases" FM vs ODBC "

Not sure how to do this.

Tom

Indeed, impressive results.  I'd like to see tests on Lasso 8.x.

There are some minor limitations with ODBC, though.

Note: we will also have 'the Rhino' along on tour for any photo opportunities that may arise with existing or new CLD's, Lasso Professional Association members (current or not-quite-current)
See his earlier excursion this year http://twitpic.com/4svk4t

Failing that, for those who can't make the conference - on the Friday night after the conference is all said and done, we'll be looking for a friendly informal watering hole in San Diego - all recommendations gratefully received! :)

Hi Tom,

What I did was set up the FM datasource, ran the tests, then went and edited the host -> db so that it was an alias with a * at the end.
Then went and added the ODBC datasource, ran the tests.

That way the two don't conflict.

Make sense?

Looks like the major limitation might be repeating fields and probably also portal.
Everything else looks like it should be easy.

Not in a position to test the same conditions with 8.6 sorry, perhaps after I get back from FM DevCon.

There's a nice brewpub downtown, Karl Strauss.  Was down there for the All-Star game back in 1992, the year after the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series.

BTW, a group of rhinos…is called a "crash".

Cheers

Nice, might have a chance to check out that pub.

And yeah, we think the "crash" ironic too :)
