Lasso 8.6 on Ubuntu?

Wade Maxfield

I might be trying the impossible here but has anyone gotten Lasso 8.6 to run reliably on Ubuntu?

I've used Lasso-Professional-8.6.3-1.el6.x86_64.rpm and ImageTag.x86_64-IM-6.7.2.tgz from the Lassosoft site.

I’ve managed to get an install running of Lasso 8.6.3 on Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS and have it loading data from MySQL, sending email and doing simple image manipulation via Image->Scale, etc.  LJAPI seems to be working since the DNS tag returns a valid answer without crashing, and so does simple PDF creation.

But I periodically get crashes like:

[from LassoService8.out]
#
# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
#
#  SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00007f09482c8e9f, pid=11188, tid=0x00007f08f4cf9700
#
# JRE version: OpenJDK Runtime Environment (8.0_162-b12) (build 1.8.0_162-8u162-b12-0ubuntu0.16.04.2-b12)
# Java VM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (25.162-b12 mixed mode linux-amd64 compressed oops)
# Problematic frame:

#
# Failed to write core dump. Core dumps have been disabled. To enable core dumping, try "ulimit -c unlimited" before starting Java again
#
# An error report file with more information is saved as:
# /usr/local/Lasso Professional 8/LassoSites/default-1/hs_err_pid13584.log

which was caused by:

Variable: 'myImageInfo' = (Image: '/_images/image.jpg');
$myImageInfo->(Describe);

I don’t think there’s anything totally screwed with the java install since creating a simple PDF works:

Var:'MyFile'=(PDF_Doc: -File='/_images/MyFile.pdf', -Size='A4', -Margin=(Array: 144.0, 144.0, 72.0, 72.0));
Var: 'Font'=(PDF_Font: -Face='Helvetica', -Size=36);
Var: 'Text'=(PDF_Text:'I am a PDF document', -Font=$Font);
$MyFile->(Add: $Text);
$MyFile->Close;

Any ideas on how to fix, or what steps they used to get Lasso 8.6 going on Ubuntu (preferably 16.04)?

What does hs_err_pid13584.log show is the problem?  Might be Java needs more memory allocated.

That’s a 73Kb file that I’ve trimmed a little below.  I’m not certain exactly how to interpret it.

I wondered about that and found instructions that Pier used a few years ago to increase it. I added:

insert into global_prefs (`store_key`,`data`) values
("java_vm_options","-Xms32m -Xmx256m”);

and when that didn’t make a difference I bumped it to -Xms64m -Xmx256m.  Still crashes.

Xms[2^n]m = minimum size
Xmx[2^n]m = maximum size

You adjusted the minimum size, so maybe try the maximum?

Nonetheless, from what little I understand from Java dumps, I
didn't see anything related to insufficient memory allocation or usage.

There was a suggestion in the dump to get more information:

># Failed to write core dump. Core dumps have been disabled. To enable core dumping, try "ulimit -c unlimited" before starting Java again

Finally I assume image->describe maps to IM's identify.
http://support.cs.nott.ac.uk/help/docs/image/ImageMagick/www/identify.html

It could be a resource-hungry call, depending on the source image.

Perhaps you can experiment on the command line with the image
that causes the crash to get some useful information.  Then
repeat via shell or os_process, and bypass Lasso's image tags
for this one call.

In reply to this post by Wade Maxfield
Based on the error, I’m guessing the image object isn’t created when you call ->describe on it.

I don’t recall how you can tell if creating an image object worked, maybe error_currenterror?  Or type?

var(‘myImageInfo’) = image('/_images/image.jpg');

if($myImageInfo->type == ‘image’); // or check error_currenterror?
$myImageInfo->describe;
else;
error_currenterror;
/if;

The image object is created. This works:

Variable: 'myImageInfo' = (Image: '/_images/image.jpg');
$myImageInfo->(Width);
‘x’;
$myImageInfo->(Height);
‘ ‘;
$myImageInfo->(Format);

and spits out
142x198 JPEG

but as soon as I put

$myImageInfo->(Describe);

in the mix - BANG

I don’t know how to do that definitively, but just typing ulimit in bash returns unlimited so I think it’s already set.

root@server:~# ulimit
unlimited

In this case it’s a 29KB JPEG. Also dies on a 3KB GIF.  So it shouldn’t be resource-hungry.

>
> Perhaps you can experiment on the command line with the image that causes the crash to get some useful information.  Then repeat via shell or os_process, and bypass Lasso's image tags for this one call.

There’s nothing unusual with that image I can see

user@server:~$ identify _images/image.jpg
_images/image.jpg JPEG 142x198 142x198+0+0 8-bit sRGB 29.4KB 0.000u 0:00.000

Plus Image->Describe kills the lasso process on any image I try it with.

I have my own processing of images using OS_Process working with out issues, so I do have a way around this particular crash.

Background:
I’m looking at moving my existing setup from OS X to Ubuntu and I’m trying to find and fix any possible issues before pulling the trigger with customers sites.  Working around this one is doable but I don’t like having potential show stopping problems lurking.  I’d rather not have to write a whole series of test suites to test every single Lasso tag in 8.6 (I wouldn’t even know where to start)

Re: Lasso 8.6 on Ubuntu?

Bil Corry-3
It's likely a bug with the Image tag, the function that is dying
is DescribeImage2 (note that this is in the C library that is called by the
Java tag).

Not sure the image tag library is open, but if so, you can fix it. Or you
can try to get LassoSoft to fix it, but I don't think they're doing much
bug fixing these days.
