Lasso 8.6 migration from Mac to Linux

maxwellk2
Over the coming months we’re going to be migrating a number of Lasso 8.6 sites, large and small, from an Xserve running Mac OS X Server 10.5, to a VM running Linux CentOS 6.5.

In my testing Lasso 8.6 installs just fine under CentOS 6, and scanning LassoTalk the discussions seem focused on installation issues. What I’m wondering is if there are any gotchas moving Lasso 8.6 code from UNIX/Darwin to Linux/CentOS.

We’re not using any OS Process User functions, but some encryption, ImageMagik, and PDF tags - which are along the lines of what I’m thinking could have issues.

Thanks,
Max

Hi Max

One of the biggest gotcha can be case sensitivity on Linux

Ah yes, good one Rick, I’ll put that one at the top of the list.

Re: Lasso 8.6 migration from Mac to Linux

Ke Carlton-3
Yes, I would recommend considering a mass file rename to lower case — and
same goes for file references in .css, .js, .inc, .lasso or html files:

href="..."
src="..."
url(...)
@import "..."

Also, if your CMS system references files in the content (ie. img tags or
similar) they will need to be accounted for / corrected.

Depending on the scale of the system it can be a fairly substantial task.

Brad Lindsay
The case-sensitivity is an issue for MySQL database and table names (and
possibly field names).

The biggest pain you will run into is if you forget to add Lasso to any
groups owning any directories you wish to access.

So, if a directory is owned by john:john then you¹ll want to add Lasso the
john group or you will have issues with permissions.

Do NOT underestimate just how big of a deal this is.

Thanks

Good point! I ran into the same issue a while ago.

Re: Lasso 8.6 migration from Mac to Linux

Lars A. Gundersen-2
I have just done almost that exact transition, Lasso 8.6 from Mac OS X (client) 10.6/10.7 to Cent OS on Amazon EC2 / RDS. So far so good, it went actually very smooth. I never used anything but lowercase anywhere anyway. And I think the installer sets up default group permission so that it should work with the default Apache directories under /var/www (unless I've forgotten I had to fix it...).

Biggest issue I had was an earlier Lasso 8.6 installer didn't get its permission right on SELinux and would refuse to run, but I think that's been fixed now.

If you find any other issue, let us know.

Lars

Re: Lasso 8.6 migration from Mac to Linux

maxwellk2
Glad to hear it went smooth for you Lars, hoping for the same here. It does seem permissions and case sensitivity stand out as an areas of potential issues. Will certainly post updates on any others that bite me.

Want to give a big thanks to LassoSoft, again, for their push to get 8.6 running under CentOS 6. I know it was something of a step backwards, but promise to make the transition to Lasso 9 once the Linux learning curve is under my belt.

Thanks,
Max

Re: Lasso 8.6 migration from Mac to Linux

maxwellk2
In reply to this post by Lars A. Gundersen-2
The migration from Mac Xserve (Server 10.5) to Linux VM (CentOS 6.5) is just about wrapped up, it only took two years of planning and learning, then 3 months of migration, on top of our regular project load. Otherwise it went quite smooth.

Thanks for the replies to my original post. As suggested the only real issues in migrating Lasso sites from Mac to Linux was filename case sensitivity and permissions for file uploads, neither of them very difficult to resolve - especially with Steve’s trusty File Tag Permissions guide.

We went with Linode.com as they have a build out in Fremont, California, and much of the traffic originates around the SF Bay Area. I would certainly recommend Linode if anyone is looking to move to virtualized Linux.

C’est la vie Xserve.
