Lasso 8.6 and Google SMTP

Patrick Larkin-3
Hello -

We recently jettisoned our internal mail servers and moved to Google as a host of our email service.  I currently still have access to an internal SMTP server but I have to be prepared to use the Google SMTP service to send emails using Lasso.

If I set Lasso’s "Send Directly to SMTP Servers” to Yes, I get the following error (sending mail to myself):

MX record not found for direct send for [hidden email].

I’m pretty confused on the whole thing.  I can’t get it to work at all using info I’ve found here and there.  Has anyone done this?

PLEASE NOTE:  My e-mail address has changed to:  [hidden email]

Re: Lasso 8.6 and Google SMTP

Carl Ketterling
Patrick,

If this were my machine, I¹d first verify that the correct MX record could
be found using the following command on the computer running Lasso:
    nslookup -query=mx basdschools.org
If that doesn¹t return mail exchange addresses in the Google domain, that
should be fixed.

Depending on the system, you might want to flush the DNS cache.  I know how
to do this on a Mac (we use Mac servers), but not on Linux.  Or, you could
just reboot the computer.

From the LassoSoft web site, it looks like this code should work:
    [ DNS_Lookup('basdschools.org', -Type='MX') ]
I could not get that to work on my system, though.  Maybe my Lasso
installation has DNS issues, too?  I get the error, ³ERROR: Socket is not
connected ( 57 )².

Let us know what you find.

Carl

nslookup -query=mx basdschools.org returned what seems to be a good value.  I’m going to try a reboot.

Patrick Larkin-3
In reply to this post by Carl Ketterling
I rebooted and same thing.

When I attempt to put in Google’s “portable SMTP” info into Lasso, it gives this message when sending:

Message: SMTP: [2] Failed to connect to host "smtp.gmail.com”.

Gah!  I am screwed.  I think this is Lasso freaking out.

Re: Lasso 8.6 and Google SMTP

Jonathan Guthrie-3
So, in the email setup, you have Send directly off, smtp.google.com as the SMTP host, you have the right port, auth username and pwd?
Also, have you checked if the use SSL is required and set correctly?

Thanks
Jono

Yes, as per Google requirements:

smtp.gmail.com
Port 465
Google username, full, with domain: [hidden email]
Google password: ***
TLS/SSL required: yes

The last part is what I’m not sure about.  I don’t know what TLS means or if Lasso is talking it.

Re: Lasso 8.6 and Google SMTP

Jonathan Guthrie-3
Yep, Carl you're right:

If you have it sending to SMTP servers direct it will ignore those params, and try to act as a mail server.
You may not have correct reverse DNS, or any one of a number of reasons why Google might be rejecting your server as an "SMTP" server.
However if you get it to act as a SMTP *client* then it will use the auth and Google's SMTP will likely be more relaxed.

Re: Lasso 8.6 and Google SMTP

In reply to this post by Patrick Larkin-3
Try port 587, then try sending an email through the Lasso
SiteAdmin interface.  465 did not work for me.

I also have:

Ignore [Email_Send] -Host Param = No
Send Directly to SMTP Servers = No

and it works for my personal Gmail address, although I don't
host a domain with Gmail.

TLS is SSL with some differences.  Google for the full run-down.

Yes it is "on" in all scenarios except that one test.  It should be working like a mail client at this point.

I do not have it set to send to SMTP servers direct.  That didn't work as shown by the error about the MX records.

587 seems to work.  Thanks.

Upon further review, Google says 465=SSL and 587=TLS so I’m not sure why it is working but it is.

Thank you Steve!

Re: Lasso 8.6 and Google SMTP

Eric Browning-4
FWIW I also use Google with Lasso and we send so many emails (school) that
we can't use Google.  You should review their Bulk sender guidelines.  I
have to run an internal SMTP server with an SPF record to authorize it in
our DNS.

Re: Lasso 8.6 and Google SMTP

lasso-3
We've used SocketLabs for years.  Our application sends around 400k emails
each month.   As long as you follow the guidelines it's nice to have superb
delivery.

They have lots of features you can leverage as well, detailed reporting,
tracking campaigns, read-receipts, delivery receipts...  It's simply superb.
