Lasso 8.6 SMTP error

Lee Glickenhaus-2
I’ve recently fallen prey to the :  Message: SMTP:  Failed to connect to host “smtp.xxxxx.com” error under Lasso 8.6 and OSX

it started a few weeks ago and was happening (after a Lasso restart) about every 90 minutes.  It now is in a death loop — each restart of Lasso lets me squeeze out just a few emails before the problem recurs.  The queue is getting further and further behind.

I’ve scoured the web and the lists and tried everything I could find.  I’m getting desperate.  I depend on Lasso generated emails to run my business.

Can’t upgrade to 9 in time to save things.

Desperate plea for any help at all!

Thanks

lee

Ah, a member of the club!

I don’t get a high volume of email but I still get the error. I’m using Google’s portable SMTP server now and still getting the message after thinking it was some issue with our in house SMTP server.

I know this hasn’t been proven and its not 100%, but I’ve found having a scheduled email keeps the queue alive.  But it sounds like you have a lot of mail and not long periods of inactivity like I have.  Good luck.

Re: Lasso 8.6 SMTP error

Randy Zumwalde
Funny that this just popped up on the list.
I have be running fine for about a year now and all of a sudden my
emails aren't being sent.
The only thing I did is cleared out some errors that were listed in the
Email Errors tab that were from bad addresses.
I've had to stop/start lasso service 3 times today to get emails out of
the que.

Re: Lasso 8.6 SMTP error

In reply to this post by Patrick Larkin-3
Yeah.  “Keep alive” scheduled email didn’t help.  I turned off logging (and Lasso admin says it that error reporting is set to “None”) but errors are still populating the logs and the SMTP issues persist.  I’ve tried my regular in house SMTP server and Mandrill with every possible setting.  I’ve changed DNS servers.  I’ve scoured the lists and tried everything I could find. No luck.

I’ve been running the same setup for years and years now with not a single problem.  Two weeks ago it just went crazy.  What a mystery.

I’ll try a clean Lasso install as soon as there’s a chance to go offline for a bit to get it done.  Fingers crossed on that.

I set up a Montis monitor that checks the size of the queue and, when it hits a certain backlog level, triggers a page that restarts Lasso.  But it’s a kludge (and my users bitch when emails take even 30-60 minutes to show up).

A lot of grief and energy into this so far.  But I guess it’s always something…..

Re: Lasso 8.6 SMTP error

Tom Fortis
I too have been battling this gremlin... for years. I ended up writing a short lasso script to run as a scheduled event every 15 minutes. It looks for the smtp error in the lasso_internal database, 'errors' table, 'Failed to connect to host'. When the error appears, the script restarts lasso. The problem persists, but I don't have to deal with it. The script sends me an email, which gets queued up until after the restart, so I know something has happened.

I've discovered that when our campus smtp server goes offline at just the wrong time, lasso will throw the error even if it is not actively sending email. We have had similar problems with lasso and oracle database connectors. We noticed that when the databases were taken offline for maintenance, the connector would hang and we would have to restart lasso. Kind of similar, but different.

Since I've implemented the monitor/restart script, i haven't had to manually deal with the issue. We don't have a high volume of email, so it works well. I suppose you could tighten the interval to get better response.

Re: Lasso 8.6 SMTP error

You wouldn't want to share the script, would you?

I really wish Lassosoft would find the issue definitively.

Re: Lasso 8.6 SMTP error

Ke Carlton-3
When using 8.x in the past I got round the issue by doing something like
this:

email_send(
    -host = dns_lookup('smtp.google.com', -type='A'), ...
)

Non-issue since running 9.

Re: Lasso 8.6 SMTP error

Tom Fortis
In reply to this post by Patrick Larkin-3
I'll share. ;-)

It's not elegant, but fairly quick and dirty. I did create a small DB to help keep track and log the events when captured. Here ya go... Tom

[var:'restarting_site'=False]
[var:'inline_parameters'=array]
[$inline_parameters->Insert:'-Username’=‘*******’] <!-- admin level user -->
[$inline_parameters->Insert:'-Password’=‘*******’]

<!-- the ‘Monitor” database keeps track of the last smtp event -->
[Inline: -Findall, $inline_parameters, -Database='Monitor', -Table='track', -KeyField='ID'] <!--should only ever be just one record-->
        [If: Found_Count>0]
                [Records]
                        [var:'track_table_id'=Field:'ID']
                        [var:'last_event'=Field:'tracking_id']
                        [var:'last_time'=Field:'date_time']
                [/Records]
        [Else]
                <!-- must be first time running -->

It looks for the smtp error in the lasso_internal database, 'errors' table, 'Failed to connect to host'. When the error appears, the script restarts lasso. The problem persists, but I don't have to deal with it. The script sends me an email, which gets queued up until after the restart, so I know something has happened.

We have had similar problems with lasso and oracle database connectors. We noticed that when the databases were taken offline for maintenance, the connector would hang and we would have to restart lasso. Kind of similar, but different.

No luck.
