Lasso 8.6.0(.1?)

Marc Vos
I am still having problems with email_send. I have to restart Lasso 2 or 3 times per day to get mail out. And I only send about 30 messages per day, spread over the whole work day, so  about 3 per hour.

I have noticed that the email-sender inside SiteAdmin gives up when errors occur with email sending. For example when the local mail server receives an error on a sent mail, or when some other email goes wrong. From then on, any email I am trying to send ends up in error. And after a restart of Lasso, they're all sent in a jiffy. So which bit, byte or word keeps hanging around that makes that all sending efforts end up in error?

And I cannot see that I installed 8.6.0.1 because on the setup-overview it says 8.6.0, the title bar of the window says 8.6.0.... thus...I installed it again. Still says 8.6.0 everywhere.

And I wondered if it is really true that there have been no updates since april 2011???

I really need this email sending fixed... does anyone have some tips on this they want to share?

- -
Regards,
Marc

No tips or tricks, but I am seeing EXACTLY this behavior on OS X 10.6, and Lasso 8.6.

I get one smtp failed connection, and no more messages go out. They just pile up in the email error queue.

I restart the site, and out they go.

Basically I am glued to the site admin all day waiting to restart every time an error occurs.

FWIW, I don't see this problem on Lasso 8.6.0.1 on CentOS 8.6.
But that may be because I don't get a failed connection.

Can you find a way to reliably reproduce a failed connection
outside of Lasso?  Then you can isolate that part, while the
Lasso email queue issue gets looked at by LS.

Also, I would highly recommend using monit.  You can adapt the
script to check for an smtp failed connection error using a
Lasso script, then restart the site.  It won't solve the
problem, but it will allow you to take a vacation.

Almost 5 months in a row ... and then I stopped because there were no solutions. With support, we tried to alter the way Lasso starts up, but that did not change anything.

I do not see this with 8.6 on CentOS 5.5 64-bit. I have over a thousand emails sent without a single error. I send all emails with the default host that is an SMTP server on the LAN in the network center where the server is located.

I also still have an old Xserve running 10.4 and Lasso 8.5.6, and the only errors in sending mail are due to invalid recipients or not being able to connect to the receiving mail server. Over 25K sent successfully. It also sends with the same default host.

So I am not alone! Maybe that helps!

I forgot to mention that I am running Mac OS 10.6.8 too.

I don't know whether Utility > Threads > Threads would be of
help.  I see two threads in my SiteAdmin.  The site restarted yesterday.

Name: SMTP: Email Queue (Main)
Thread ID: 1680853904

Thread Age: 19 Hours

Thread ID: 1670364048

Then you can examine threads using ps:

ps -eLf 1680853904

Although I have no idea how to interpret that or if it's useful.

Those are the kind of errors I mean. Reverse DNS errors, recipients that do not exist, etc. One or two are enough to cripple the sending of the rest.

So I am now changing code to send email via another mail server, using different genuine email addresses, by using the -host, -username and -password parameters. This worked yesterday but today an error occurred (someone typed a wrong recipient) while sending via the localhost from another page and that led the rest into error... I wasn't finished changing all code. Now I changed that page too. We'll see tomorrow morning ... not all other code can be changed right now.

Re: Lasso 8.6.0(.1?)

Marc Vos
Just now it happens again and that ps command doesn't work on 10.6. I tried with -M but the ID's in Lasso 8 have negative numbers so I don't know how I check which threads actually are running on the system:

Thread Name: SMTP: SMTP Queue (Main)
Thread ID: -1323110400
Thread Start: 2012-08-22 14:49:33
Thread Age: 20 Hours
Thread Priority: Default

Thread Name: SMTP: Email Queue (Main)
Thread ID: -1323642880
Thread Start: 2012-08-22 14:49:33
Thread Age: 20 Hours

So I must now restart Lasso.

Re: Lasso 8.6.0(.1?)

Seth Ganahl
Marc-

Et.al.

Did you ever get any resolution on this?  I've been restarting the Lasso
site here probably 10 times a day, and re-queuing all errors just to get
email to go out the door.

Same old story, the Email SMTP Queue logs a "smtp connection failed" error.
DNS stops working (for Lasso, not for the OS).  I.E. The nslookup tags no
longer work; however, and this may be a clue to resolving the issue if Lasso
Soft ever intends to patch 8.6, ftp STILL WORKS.  The FTP tags are appaently
using a different method to resolve dns than the email tags, and nslookup
tags?

Use Jason Huck's Mandrill replacement for the email_send tag.

Hi Seth,

No. But I did reduce it by analyzing all pages called by Lasso and eliminating/trapping all possible errors (Lasso errors, MySQL errors, etc.) and switched off error-logging almost completely.

Turning off error logging solved any problems I had too.  Did it a year ago and everything has been good.
