Lasso 8.5 and relaying email through Mavericks server (postfix)

Steve Upton

Hi All,

I’ve researched past posts but not yet found an answer.

We currently have a Lasso 8.5 server sending all email through a OS X 10.4 server which is set to relay all mail from the server’s IP address. Works fine, has for years.

Now we’re upgrading the OS X server to Mavericks 10.9 which uses Postfix and a much more simplified (being charitable) configuration UI. It seems that we can create a user / mail account on the 10.9 server and then have Lasso sign in using basic password authentication in order to hand off the mail using SMTP.

That said, Lasso is having trouble connecting and showing "Failed to connect to host” errors and on the 10.9 server SMTP log we’re seeing:

Aug 20 13:53:02 mavericksServer postfix/postscreen[9194]: CONNECT from [lassoServer]:55827 to [216.254.4.102]:25
Aug 20 13:53:02 mavericksServer postfix/postscreen[9194]: PREGREET 18 after 0.37 from [lassoServer]:55827: HELO [127.0.0.1]\\r\\n
Aug 20 13:53:02 mavericksServer postfix/smtpd[10522]: connect from [lassoServer]
Aug 20 13:53:02 mavericksServer postfix/smtpd[10522]: lost connection after HELO from [lassoServer]
Aug 20 13:53:02 mavericksServer postfix/smtpd[10522]: disconnect from [lassoServer]

It looks like a pretty low-level basic failure.

Are Lasso 8.5 and Postfix incompatible or do I have a config error here?

thanks

Steve Upton

If you are upgrading to a Mavericks server, I suggest you also upgrade to Lasso 8.6.3. Good chance that it solves your problem.

Understood but we’re not wanting to bite that much off at this time (longer plan to move to 9.x)

Note, that the upgrade is not to the server that Lasso is running upon - only the server that’s tasked with relaying all email traffic.

That and I’ve yet to hear of someone happy with the mail delivery of 8.6…..

I had this problem with Lasso 8.5 and had to crawl into the postfix conf
(/Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/main.cf) file and allow relay from the
IP address which is the "mynetworks = " setting.  Go ALL the way down tot
the bottom of the file which is where the real configs are stored.
Everything else above is just documentation.

I was just thinking out loud ... 10.4 to 10.9 is quite a jump and then IMO it justifies also the jump from 8.5 to 8.6.

8.5 to 9.2 is muuuucchhh more work...

VERY helpful, that worked (and altering the smtpd_recipient permissions)

thanks!

Steve

oh yeah. But that’s the future so that’s where we’re aiming.

In the meantime, not introducing more things is good when possible.
