L8.6 / FM12 inconsistent delays

Steven McIntosh
I'm having some strange issues with a FileMaker 12 server and Lasso 8.6 setup. We've been testing this setup over the last few weeks and everything has been great except:

(I don't have a lot of statistics - still sorting this out)

Sometimes a single database request will take 20 seconds (repeatedly), but if I log into FileMaker and make a change, the request will be virtually instant. It will stay virtually instant for a period of time and then start taking 20 seconds again. I can confirm that there were no users in the FileMaker Server and this server is not in full deployment (read as: nobody is really using it yet).

The table has only a few simple fields, no calculations, no related data displayed on the table.

I've tested by making the same database call via /fmi/xml and the data is almost always instant (the only exception is if I'm running the call in another window and it's in the middle of it's 20sec reply).

So although I would think it's a FileMaker Server response time problem (data caching?), the XML request always works, which makes me think it's a Lasso issue.

I can supply server specs if needed.

Thanks in advance for any insight,
Steven McIntosh

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
I've tested this on our Lasso9 server with the same exact results (20 seconds almost exactly every time). The FileMaker server is not being taxed in the slightest.

Are they on the same subnet, with no firewalls in place?
What OS's are the servers on?

Re: L8.6 / FM12 inconsistent delays

Steven McIntosh
FileMaker 12 Server:
VM running on ESXi 5.1; Windows Server STandard 2008 R2 SP1(2008 release 2, service pack 1); 4 virtual processors (Xeon X5650 class, 2.66GHz, 8GB RAM, storage is attachd via NFS to an EMC VNX5300...)

Lasso 8.6 and Lasso 9:
separate VMs running on Mac Pro 12-core Xeon; OS 10.8.3

All on the same subnet—I don't know about the firewalls, but our network guys have been involved in the troubleshooting and this has not been brought up.

Suggest using timer.  Make sure it is the inline search that is
causing the delay, and not either version of Lasso.
http://www.lassosoft.com/tagswap/detail/timer

If confirmed, then go through standard FM optimizations as
directed in the Language Guide.

This is possibly due to network latency of some kind.
How's your fm host definition set up?
Are you using inline hosts or set up in the admin?
Are you using IP Address or host name?
Are you using the FM connector or ODBC?

Thanks

Hi Steve,

I've built a lasso page that just does the 1 database call and display the results—a 6 field/3 record table and the results vary from .4 to 20 seconds, sometimes one right after the other. Everything from the FM Layouts/fields to the Lasso page have been stripped of everything. I'll check the documentation you note.

The host is setup by IP using the FileMaker SA connector. Hosts defined in admin.

I like working on network traffic, so I'd use tcpdump to see what's being
sent back and forth.  I know there are easier ways, but that's what I'm
comfortable with (especially since it's reliably reproducible at some
point).

OK, in that case, you've already isolated the issue and you
really don't need to use timer.  It's only useful when you have
a lot of other things in the same file.
