Is LassoSoft OUT OF BUSINESS??

Stephen Smiroldo-4
Does anyone know what’s going on with LassoSoft?? We’re having a critical issues with our hosting license and can’t get in touch with them.

I’ve tried to call their 888-286-7753 number but it’s no longer in service.

Anyone?

We took the phone numbers off the website many months ago because it was costing $100/month and nobody had called it in almost a year. Waste not, want not. Obviously we missed that page, sorry. Remember phones? (I’ve added a phone number for Treefrog where the Lasso team is still available).

We are still available, I’ll make sure you are contacted off-list.

I have a client who had a similar experience.  This is one of
the reasons they have moved a majority of their legacy apps from
Lasso to other languages and vendors.

Yep. Me too. No projects in Lasso anymore, all converted to PHP in the last 6 months.

It has been a good time with Lasso and it has helped me with my career.

Re: Is LassoSoft OUT OF BUSINESS??

Sean Stephens-3
In reply to this post by Brett Harvey
Brett

Apologies - there was some pretty crazy confusion on our end regarding your company/serial information over the last two decades. You’ve been contacted off-list.

Although tech support is rarely contacted any more (as in, once a month, usually to get help with something from over a decade ago), it is still being manned. Though admittedly - we get ~100 spam emails a day to these combined accounts (even after spam filtering), so unfortunately, stuff gets missed.

If you need a prompt response, just call the number of the Lassosoft contact page (I just added it) and ask for Eric. He’s still cranking away on Lasso-related activities daily.

Thanks,

Sean

Re: Is LassoSoft OUT OF BUSINESS??

Stephen Smiroldo-4
This may not make a difference at this point but are there any plans to open source Lasso and just sell service/support plans?

Plus, what is Eric doing? It would help the community if there was communication about these activities. If people had more confidence in Lasso’s longevity (especially through a “freemium” or open source direction) they wouldn’t have (or be) dropping off like flies.

The perfect scenario would be if Lasso was free (except for support) and 1 or 2 major hosting companies supported installation (i.e. through cPanel/Softaculous). Have you all ever spoken with Softaculous?

Re: Is LassoSoft OUT OF BUSINESS??

Steffan A. Cline
Open sourcing the product this late in the game seems like it would be a good idea and a positive effort to bring back some of the community.

The pricing has been a showstopper for many people for quite some time. The licensing model is another one that many people are put off by. The subscription based models are being pushed on people but for server software having to rely on serial servers has proven for me in many instances to be a bad idea.

I could almost ensure that if it was to go open source, I could get a module included in Virtualmin that would download the software and install it and configure instances for each one of the sites that it creates with links into the Lasso admin. This will be one great way to add visibility to the product.

Modules for these popular control panel packed would be a definite plus.

Also, if it was truly open sourced, you could probably get this distributed with some of the major distro‘s. The entire project could be managed on Github by the public.

I recently wrote some code for dynamic DNS using Lasso with DS and it was amazing just how easy and fast it was. I sure miss programming in it daily!

Re: Is LassoSoft OUT OF BUSINESS??

Jolle Carlestam-2
Me thinks it’s time to raise at least one positive voice for Lasso.

I’m involved in several, successful, major software projects. New and old. All of them written in Lasso and none of them with problems in regards to the pricing or commercial potential. In fact it so happens that we did a bidding for a big service to a major city in Sweden about a month ago. Our price was less than half of the closest competition on a yearly basis. Why we could offer such a significantly lower price? Among other reasons, that Lasso is so easy and efficient to get a working solution going in. We knew we could get what the client asked for using way less man hours than our competitor. (They use Java, BTW…)

Of course I would like it if Lasso came without a price. But the fact that it has a price has never been an obstacle for me.
Of course I would love if Lasso had a substantially bigger user base, But the fact thet it hasn’t has never affected me. The quality of the user base it had was of much greater help than I’ve had in any other software area.
Of course it would be beneficial if Lassosoft had maintained the staffing it once had. But I knew about their organisational changes and when I recently needed some help (also a license issue) turned to Eric directly and got the assistance I asked for. Promptly. In the case of communication with Lassosoft I have never relied on the generic email addresses. I have always turned directly to Kyle/Jono/Rachel/Eric/Sean. And they have always answered me with relevant responses. Politely too. Even when my question or demand was totally up the wall.

In fact I have never come in contact with another software company that’s been so close to its community.

Now with all that said. Of course Lasso doesn’t have a future in the long run. There will not be a Lasso 10. Or rather, there already is a Lasso 10, but for marketing reasons it’s called Perfect. And as was the case with the move from Lasso 8 to Lasso 9, it requires a completely new mindset and to rewrite you server side code from scratch. This time without even the pretence that it would be compatible. A lot of the thinking is the same though. And as I understand, it is a success story.

So in the long run I too will have to abandon Lasso. There will be new versions of other software, be it the DB, OS or whatnot that won’t be compatible and will force a move away from Lasso. But for each new project I undertake right now, the value of being able to reuse my existing code base and the quality and speed that Lasso offers me, wins over moving to a completely new server side programming language. So that move, for me, is not now. It’s not this year and probably not next year. Lasso still is an excellent product and serves me well.

You must be kidding!  Maybe for people who have direct relationships with
the developer(s).

In reply to this post by Jolle Carlestam-2
joile

thank you very much for your thoughtful note.
i agree in whole.

programming in lasso has always been a great pleasure such that i have always taken equal pleasure in paying for it.
and the few times i have contacted the lassosoft folks, they’ve been extremely kind and helpful (like this list).

and like you, i shall continue using lasso 9 this year. and the next. and likely the one after.
should i find a moment, i’ll take a peek at Perfect.

with thanks again to joile, this cadre of developers and lassosoft

>

Re: Is LassoSoft OUT OF BUSINESS??

Jussi Hirvi-2
I am moving towards Ruby on Rails. The elegance and user-friendliness of
ruby remind me of the same attributes in Lasso 9.

Though I have too many legacy L8 applications to convert to Lasso 9, so
I never made the move to Lasso 9.

It seems that even RoR is now old-fashioned, and the trendy nerds are
flocking elsewhere, probably node.js.

I will miss you, all the friendly, alert, adept, amiable Lasso
developers. For now, warm thank-you to everyone.

I use node.js for anything that requires a near real time — it's great for
that with sockets.

I use Lasso 9 for anything critical / API calls. Lasso 9 has been mature
for so many years now; asides from supporting newer operating systems I
believe it's near feature complete.

Even if the future only holds continued support of new versions of OSX and
Linux I'd be happy...

Alex Betz-3
I will follow a similar strategy. Unfortunately, I feel that In the
longterm I will have to completely transition to another language - as in
develop nothing new with lasso.

Go(lang) is pretty awesome. And soooooooo fast.
Interactions with elastic and mySQL are about 10x as fast. As far as I can
make out this is due to much better connection management.

Re: Is LassoSoft OUT OF BUSINESS??

Steffan A. Cline
Is that a comparison against Lasso 8 or 9?

9 is far faster than 8 especially when using DS over standard inlines. So far, I’ve not seen anything beat 9/DS.

Thanks,

Re: Is LassoSoft OUT OF BUSINESS??

Alex Betz-3
that is against L9 using DS with exactly the same database on the same
network - it is a completely different game. And I haven't even started to
play with concurrency.

Re: Is LassoSoft OUT OF BUSINESS??

Steffan A. Cline
That just seems so hard to fathom.

I’d love to see Ke do a comparison. He’s found every possible way to extract the most from Lasso that the rest of us haven’t even begun to touch.
