How to handle Smart Quotes / Curly Quotes in FileMaker fields

Tami Williams
Client has Smart Quotes / Curly Quotes in a FileMaker field.

When field is displayed via Lasso the quotes show as a weird
character.  How can I get them to show correctly?

I'm having client do a replace on the field in FileMaker, but is there
a way to get Lasso to show straight quotes when curly quotes (single /
double) are in the database?

Thanks in advance.

I haven't used Filemaker forever to know if there is any special
settings on the FM side of things, but typically these things can be
corrected by making sure all areas are sending and interpreting utf-8
encoded characters.  If you put a smart quote directly into the source
code, does it display properly?

If not, try saving your html/lasso file as utf-8 w/BOM and then see if
it draws properly.

If you can load them when pasted in, then it's likely something with the
database connection somewhere.  I'm not familiar enough with FM to know
where to look, but I'd start looking for anything related to UTF-8 and
the database tables you're using within the lasso admins...

Most likely your client is entering data using MacRoman, but Lasso thinks the charset is something else.  You need to make them match for it to work; I suggest UTF-8 as it will be the least painful.

Do you mean this in my html header:

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">

(doesn't make a difference)

Or something else?

No, that header is useless.  I only include it so that my HTML passes the Validator.

I don't use Filemaker, but if there's a setting that specifies the charset of the database, it should be set to UTF-8.  And on the Lasso side, if the host connector for Filemaker allows you to specify the charset, you should set it to UTF-8.  Assuming you've made every setting in FM and Lasso set to UTF-8 that you can find, it still won't work for existing data as it's already incorrectly stored.  So your testing should be with someone entering new data once the new settings have been saved.
