General updates to Knop for Lasso 9

list
I have committed the latest working version of Knop for Lasso 9 to the Google repo. The last update was done five months ago
and there has been a vast number of changes and improvements since then.
Feel free to test it out.

Are there any known issues at this time, specifically things in
the 8 version that do not work in the 9 version?

Re: General updates to Knop for Lasso 9

list
It's a super valid question but honestly, I can't say.
For the last six month focus has been entirely on making sure the code works with my way of using Knop for Amtac needs and intentions.
Since all code we produce is written directly for Lasso 9, that is we don't move any 8.5 code over to our present projects, I have no way of telling if and what Lasso 8 specific features that would not work.

I should have, but I haven't, checked that at least the present demo for 8.5 works. Anyone getting the urge to do that, feel free.

The one issue that springs to mind is that Knop for 8 deals with references different than Knop for 9.

You cant do this:
var(myarray = array)
/.../
$fForm -> addfield(
        -type = 'select',
        -name = 'myfield',
        -label = $lang -> getstring('mylabel'),
        -options = $myarray
)
/.../
$myarray = array('Value 1', 'Value 2')

The above works in Lasso 8 but will break in Lasso 9.

You can however do this:
var(myarray = array)
/.../
$fForm -> addfield(
        -type = 'select',
        -name = 'myfield',
        -label = $lang -> getstring('mylabel'),
        -options = $myarray
)
/.../
$myarray -> insert('Value 1')
$myarray -> insert('Value 2')

Re: General updates to Knop for Lasso 9

Can you do this?

var(myarray = (''='Select a Value','v1','v2',...,'vN'))
/.../
$fForm -> addfield(
     -type = 'select',
     -name = 'myfield',
     -label = $lang -> getstring('mylabel'),
     -options = $myarray
)

Also, has there been any collaboration with LassoSoft (excluding
emails to lists) to migrate any portions of Knop from 8 to 9?
Part of my hesitation to get involved in the migration effort is
that I have limited bandwidth to help on this, but at least I
can provide some use cases.

I would say yes. Not actually testing it but I can't see why it shouldn't work.

> Also, has there been any collaboration with LassoSoft (excluding emails to lists) to migrate any portions of Knop from 8 to 9?
You're hitting my alzheimer spots here but there has indeed been direct communications with Lassosoft, primarily Jono and Kyle. Not that many and the result in most cases has been that they (Kyle) has changed something in Lasso to benefit Knop behavior. Knop has definitely brought a lot of bugs to the surface.
Might have been one or two occasions where they've helped auditing pieces of code and suggested alternative ways of writing it.
Perhaps the younger and still vital Tim Taplin can add his own recollections in this.

To my knowledge they have not looked into the Knop framework in a more general way. Chris did it when he was a Treefrog employee. Don't know in what regards that knowledge still lingers. I doubt that Lassosoft (Kyle, Jono) have installed it or tested the demo but I could be wrong. They have not been proactive. All feedback, if any, has come as a direct result of a request from us.

> Part of my hesitation to get involved in the migration effort is that I have limited bandwidth to help on this, but at least I can provide some use cases.

For the moment test cases is the best thing. I need examples of how other people use Knop in order to find the remaining quirks. Tim did an excellent job in converting code but one major obstacle was no doubt that he was not and still isn't a Knop user. Thus could not provide test cases or alternative ways of calling Knop. He converted code sometimes without knowing what the code was supposed to do. ...truthfully so did I from time to time... Still have sections in the code that I'm not clear on the purpose...

Yeah, I would like to get a commitment from LassoSoft on their
level of commitment, if that makes sense.  I know they recognize
the value of migrating Knop.  They have it as well as the demo
package to work with.  I've also offered them code samples and
use cases.

I'm inclined to wait a week or so to see how things shake out at
LS after their retreat and they reset their priorities.  Not
sure where Knop lies in that priority list.
