Filemaker range search

Peter D Bethke
Hello all,

I’ve worked with SQL so long now that going back to filemaker is seriously crazy-making when it comes to simple range searching.

I’m using FMP Adv. Server 14, Lasso 8.6. I just want to get a range between two numbers.

I _thought_ back in the day, this is how we did it. I can get the GTE part working - but when I add the second part, i get an FMP error.

What exactly am I doing wrong here? :)

Inline: -Database=‘mycatcatdb',
            -Table='detail',
            -inlinename='categories',
            -oplogical='and',
            -op='gte',
            'catnum' = '3000',
            -op='lte',
            'catnum' = '9000',
            -search,
            -sortfield=‘category',
            -maxrecords='all’;

/inline;

Best,

Peter Bethke

On a semi-related note, is Tami Williams still around? She was always really sharp with FMP stuff.

Best,

Peter

It used to be that you would just use equals and then use lowervalue…highervalue as the value.  Been a long time, it may have changed.

In Filemaker if you want to find records in a range you do

starting nbr...ending number

so

> 3000...9000

I think it works that way in lasso too, so

> -op='eq',

> catnum' = '3000...9000',

Sorry don't have time to test.

Here’s an old thread that shows range searches working with Lasso 8.6 and FMS12. Will work the same with FMS14.

        http://lasso.2283332.n4.nabble.com/Can-I-use-Lasso-8-5-with-FileMaker-Server-12-tt4639151.html#a4639406

Note Johan’s follow up post that only two periods are need for the range operator, which helps avoid the special ellipsis character from potentially getting in the way, like so..

Inline: -Database=‘mycatcatdb',
          -Table='detail',
          -inlinename='categories',
          -oplogical='and',
          'catnum' = '3000..9000',
          -search,
          -sortfield=‘category',
          -maxrecords='all’;
/inline;

FM12 and later (?) doesn't allow specifying the same field more than
once in the same query. That's pretty dumb.

The solution for ranges is to specify the range with two (or three)
periods between start value and end value, i.e. STARTDATE..ENDDATE
