Filemaker 17

Patrick Larkin-3
Hey everyone! :)

I have one or two things that still use Lasso 8.6 to Filemaker 12.  I need to migrate stuff to Filemaker 17.  Does Lasso work with it?  I turned on Web Direct on the server and gave the permission on a test database but Lasso is not listing any databases when I do a refresh.  Maybe the Lasso code can’t deal with this version?  Thanks for anyone still reading this and able to help.

Re: Filemaker 17

Cole, Gregg
Patrick, although I don’t have a solution for you now, I use FM 17 server and would like to know if you can get 8.6 to work. I am working on this before the holidays and will share what I come up with.

Lasso uses the Web Publishing Engine and Custom Web Publishing,
not Web Direct.

According to this:
https://fmhelp.filemaker.com/docs/17/en/fmsinstall/#clients

     Supported client applications

FileMaker Server supports the following client applications:
     ...

     * Web users accessing data via the FileMaker Server Web
Publishing Engine using FileMaker WebDirect, Custom Web
Publishing with PHP, and Custom Web Publishing with XML

So... maybe...?

Rumors have been tossed around about the future of CWP, now that
there is a FM Data API introduced in FMS 16.

     * Web services or applications accessing data through
       the FileMaker Data API

There's both Python- and PHP-based tools for that.

Stanley Weber
We updated our operation to FileMaker Server 17 a few weeks ago and it seems to be working fine with Lasso 8.6.3.

Interesting. I added our server as a Filemaker SA host and now the Lasso server is totally freaking out. “Can’t connect to Lasso service...” Multiple reboots. I think something got hosed!

Re: Filemaker 17

Stanley Weber
My much more knowledgable colleague says:

FileMaker Server PHP and CWP need to be turned on in command line after the server is up and running because it can no longer be done in the FMS Admin Console. Something like the advice from 36works: http://docs.360works.com/index.php/Enable_XML_FileMaker_17

  fmsadmin set cwpconfig enablexml=true

  fmsadmin set cwpconfig enablephp=true

I should mention both FMS and Lasso are on Macs.

Stan

Re: Filemaker 17

In reply to this post by stevepiercy
I haven't done extensive testing, but it appears FMS17 works with Lasso 8.6, same as FMS12 thru FMS16. I'll be migrating a very busy Lasso 8.6/9.2 site from FMS15 to FMS17 next month and will post any issues.

The CWP XML connector has been removed from the FMS Admin Console interface and needs to be activated thru the command line:

        fmsadmin SET CWPCONFIG ENABLEXML=true

A list of other setting that have moved to the FMS command line can be found here:

        fmsadmin help set

During a roadmap presentation last week I posed the question to the FileMaker product manager, and although the connector has been removed from the Admin Console, CWP XML is not slatted for depreciation or EOL. These roadmap presentations usually cover the next two version, so I'm assuming FMS18 and FMS19 will still support CWP XML.

As Steve pointed out, FileMaker now has a proper JSON REST API, which is likely the future of integrating with FileMaker and looks very promising. However, API connections burn data from a pool, you're allowed 2 GB per user licenses per month, the data pool is calculated yearly but you can buy more - so yeah, we're back to a licensing model from FileMaker that makes it challenging to use it for a high traffic website. I did ask LassoSoft if they plan to support a connector for the new API but...well.

Thanks,
Max
