-FMScript

detlef.hebbel
Are there any issues with "-FMScript".

Cannot get it working on FMSA/Lasso 8 connection

and there is almost no activity about this on the list about it.

Help would be highly appreciated;
[Anatoli, please no negative comments from you please :)]

Thanks
Detlef

Re: -FMScript

I've never used -FMScript, maybe you can get Lasso to do whatever the
script you're calling does.

One possible reason (for little/no discussion on this list) that I
recall from earlier Filemaker days, is that Filemaker locked up while
executing a script - preventing any other database actions - making an
already pokey web data source even worse.  Since Lasso 3 at least it
has been generally faster to have Lasso do any script work.

I am aware about the 'dislike' of some Lasso specialists when it comes to
using "-FMScript". I am using it very nicely with FM4/Lasso 3.x without any
problem for at least 4 years. I have scripts in FM, which I think, I am not
able to build in Lasso alone i.e copy a FM Layout and mail it, (Maybe it can
be done in Lasso or else, but I am just an apprentice).

However, are there any known issues with "-FMScript" and Lasso 8.
Has anyone positive experience? Anyone got "-FMScript" with FMSA 7 and lasso
8 working?

Thanks

Detlef

It *might* be that FMSA is the problem, don't know. But it would help
the list to help you if we could see an example of how you're using
the tags. At least then we could rule out idiosyncrasies in the code.

Thanks Douglas.

Here is my code:

[Inline: Action_Params,
-Database='MyFMDatabase',
-Layout='MyLayout',
-MaxRecords=1,
-FMScript='MyFMScript',
-FindAll]

[/Inline]

And here the link:
http://MyDomain/FMScript.lasso?-KeyValue=3&-Token.Action=Find%20All%20Record
s

An assessment of the above would be appreciated.

All permission should be ok.
The script name in FM equals the one in the inline.

Thanks

Detlef ,
I cannot be negative or positive on this.
(I still don't know, why you think, that my response will be negative).

Anyway -- we stick with FM 5/6, because our move to FM7
will be very expensive. If we outgrown capacity of FM5/6
there are plenty of SQL databases doing the job nicely without the costs.

My best shot: scripts where running in full version of FM4/5/6.
Is FMSA 7 THE FULL version of FM with the ability to run the scripts?
Or is it just serving data to the web or other use?

FMP server also cannot run scripts.

Have fun!

Anatoli

My best bet is, that Lasso 8 is OK, but FMSA cannot run the script.

Do [Error_Msg] and [Error_Code] tags return anything interesting when

Hi Detlef,

I can confirm we have -fmscript working with Lasso 8 and FMSA7.  (In our
case it's a necessary evil to get past the lack of support for -opbegin and
-opend)  Things I'd check include Doug's suggestion for seeing if any errors
are being detected on the lasso side, but also I'd look at your FMSA7 web
publishing engine logs - if something is going wrong inside a script, the
error will show up there.

Just so no one gets the idea that it's our fault, FMSA doesn't
support the -opbegin/-opend, not us.

Re: -FMScript

Pierre Yelle
In reply to this post by detlef.hebbel
Hi Detlef,

if this script worked in previous versions, it might be that your
script when appied in FMP 7 is not setting your records in the correct
"layout/table-ocurrence" context to pull records that you are trying to
retreive.

Also be sure to build failsafes into your script that will Exit the
script in case of error.
You cannot put too many of those.. like at at all major procedures the
script attempts.

Hi John good to hear that it is working with you. Are you connected through
Lasso to FMSA7 directly or to a FMClient?

Probably my question does not make any sense as only FMSA allows Lasso
connections?

I am desperate and lost with this issue...

Thanks

Hi Detlef,

Yes, we have Lasso talking directly to our FMSA7 server.  You mentioned your
setup is hosted - I would suggest communicating with them about this before
you spend any more time pulling your hair out on your own!

If the error isn't being exposed to you in Lasso, then it probably has
something to do with either how your script is written, or how FMSA7 is
setup.  Your host should be able to help you figure out which of these the
case is.  I'd give them a call!

Re: -FMScript

detlef.hebbel
In reply to this post by detlef.hebbel
The Lasso tag -FMScript works well.

The problem is FileMaker 'ScriptMaker' related as I found now: Within my
FileMaker scripts I have 'import records', which is, when used with FMSA
connector not web compatible.

Probably I have to change over with my issues to the FMP List as it is no
Lasso issue.

Anyhow, does anybody on this List would know a way how to substitute the
script step 'import records' in a FMSA situation? Why I am doing this:
wanted to import all records into an archive.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers

Detlef

There are several options. :-)

LASSO AS A CONDUIT
----------------------------------------------------------------
You could use Lasso as a conduit between two databases, do a search in
database A, loop through the records, for each record found, insert data in
database B. This works even between databases of different formats, like FM,
MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server and so on.

Pseudocode:

[Inline: -Database='A'
... Find stuff...
-SEARCH]
[Records]
... Get data from fields in database A...
    ... Store them in vars...
    [Inline: -Database='B'
... Insert stuff in database B using vars...
    -ADD]
[/Inline]
[/Records]
[/Inline]

USE FILE AND ARRAY TAGS
----------------------------------------------------------------
If the records you wish to import is in a textfile, you could use Lasso for
that as well. A file can be read one line at a time and then the contents of
one line can be split into an array. Each value in the array can then be
inserted in a database of any kind that Lasso can talk to, like FM, MySQL,
Oracle, SQL Server and so on.

Consult the LDML-dictionary here: http://ldml.omnipilot.com/ and look for
tags in the categorys of file and array.

This pseudocode assumes that the file is comma-separated. If not, replace ,
with \t for a tab-separated file.

Pseduocode:
Open the file for reading one line at a time
[Var:'TheFileWithMyRecordsToBeImported'=(File: 'myfile.txt', File_OpenRead,
File_ModeLine)] (File_ModeLine reads the file one line at a time.

Get the length of the file to now when to stop
[Var:'LengthOfFile'=(File_GetLineCount: 'myfile.txt',
  -FileEndOfLine='\n')]

FileEndOfLine should be anyone of theese:
 - Mac OS X: '\n'
 - Windows: '\r\n'
 - Mac OS 9 or Earlier: '\r'

[Loop: $LengthOfFile]

Read the next line...
    [Var: 'AParticularRecordToBeImported'=
    ($TheFileWithMyRecordsToBeImported->(Read: (Loop_Count))]

Split that line into an array.
    [Var:'AllTheFieldsInTheLine'=
    ($AParticularRecordToBeImported->(Split: ','))]

Set vars from the array, assuming array one = first name, array two = last
name and array three = city and so on.

    [Var: 'Name_First'=$AllTheFieldsInTheLine->(Get:1)]
    [Var: 'Name_Last'=$AllTheFieldsInTheLine->(Get:2)]
    [Var: 'City'=$AllTheFieldsInTheLine->(Get:3)]

Add the stuff to the database
    [Inline: -Database='A',
... Add a record to the database...
... Using the values in the vars...
    -ADD]
    [/Inline]

[/Loop]
[$TheFileWithMyRecordsToBeImported->Close]

The latter method assumes that the file to be imported is placed whereever
Lasso can get read access to it, that might mean on the FMSA-server in a
shared directory or on the Lasso-server itself.

TO GET THE WORKFLOW AUTOMATIC
----------------------------------------------------------------
The last script-step in the first script in FMSA is to open an URL, that
gets Lasso processing the import.

The last step in the Lasso import file is to call an -Script in FMSA, that
does the rest in FMSA.

Doing it like that means you don't have to intervene as a user once the
first script is run.

Good luck!

/Ola

You may be able to do it with AppleScript, embedded in the FMScript.
You could certainly have an AppleScript take all the data from one
database and put it into another.

Thanks Ole.

This looks like a very interesting solution to my problem, ... and probably
helps me to get more independent from FM as well. Good move. I will try and
test how it will work. I bit of a learning curve for me!

Is there also a possibility to actually let Lasso from a submit form 'add'
into 2 tables at the same time? i.e with multiple inlines?

Cheers
