Brad Lindsay
I know that the latest version of 9.3 is in beta, but it would be great to see a 9.2 update for El Cap.

For the moment I’d say only the latest beta.
There’s been a change in OS X in relation to access to some sections that Lasso depends on and no longer can put things in.

This was posted to the beta list, but now that 10.11 is out, I'll repost it here. You can get 9.3.1b2 for Mac from <http://www.lassosoft.com/_downloads/public/Lasso_Server/BETA/Lasso-Server-for-Mac-9.3.1-b2.zip>. Initial change notes for 9.3.1b2 are at <http://www.lassosoft.com/Lasso-9-Change-Notes>.

Anyone using OS X may have read about the new "System Intergrity Protection" or rootless mode, on by default, which (among other things) prevents the root user from adding or editing anything in /usr, except for /usr/local. This is a problem for Lasso, since it installs its binaries in /usr/bin and /usr/sbin, mirroring the Linux version. So to get around this, the following changes were made to the installer:
- lasso9, lassoc, lassoim, lassoserver, lassospitfire are installed into /usr/local/lasso
- a file called "lasso" containing "/usr/local/lasso" is added to /etc/paths.d, which adds /usr/local/lasso to any shells that call path_helper. So, if you've changed your environment to build a completely custom path instead of appending to the default, you'll need to add this path to it as well.
- mod_lasso9.so is installed in /usr/local/libexec/apache2 on systems with Apache 2.4 (OS X 10.10 and later), and the mod_lasso9.conf file has been updated to match.

If you have Lasso shell scripts with a hashbang of "#!/usr/bin/lasso9", they should be updated to say "#!/usr/bin/env lasso9" which will allow the environment to supply the path to the lasso9 binary instead of having to hard-code it.

Another side effect of rootless on OS X 10.11 is that the workaround for allowing LJAPI to work without Apple's Java 6 is no longer possible, so until Oracle fixes this bug <https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-7131356>, 10.11 users will need to install Java for OS X 2015-001 <https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572>.

the last info I had on the beta was that it still had some significant teething problems, not ready to use for development work because of issues with the json tags. Did I miss an update? I’d love to jump on that bandwagon, but dont have a separate machine to beta test lasso on .

I'd hold off. There's no big rush.

I don't have a lot of time to play with it today, but I did upgrade a test
machine and there are definitely a handful of issues to deal with.

Per usual, it backed up httpd.conf and replaced it with a generic one.

Also per usual, had to reinstall Java.

The Lasso connector was removed from the Apache modules folder, and
lasso8ctl is simply *missing* (that's a new one).

To put a copy of the Lasso connector back, I had to reboot into recovery
mode and disable System Integrity Protection (also new). Once back in
place, the connector, and Lasso (8), seem to work, but I'm seeing random
other issues that I think are mostly due to missing Apache configuration I
need to restore.

Will pick through the rest as time permits.

The json issues have been solved in beta 2.

Ke reported problems with inheritance. As in when you do parent this or parent that. They seem to only affect usage in interpreter mode.

If you set Lasso 9.3.1 to JIT, that is turn oft the default interpreter mode, then 9.3.1 has been rock solid for me since beta 2.

Lee,

My previous response was with regards to LP8.6, though the issues are

The main blocker is that Apple moved stuff around and created functions in the OS that prevents anyone from accessing certain sections of the system that Lasso uses to place the components of Lasso in.

Thus, for the time being, you’ll have to do some tweaking and fixing yourself in order for it to work.

Once that is done, all relevant versions of Lasso should work in El Capitan.

Re: El Capitan ??

jasonhuck
Several of us had previously posted instructions for compiling from source,
which is not terribly difficult on OS X or Linux (it's a bit of a pain on
Windows), but I'm not sure if anyone had posted a public link to any
compiled connectors. We've been using these for a while. I had assumed
eventually LassoSoft would make them available, but since they haven't, I
figured better to share than leave people hanging.

Hi,
Jolle you write "Once that is done.." but do you have instructions for a mere mortal? I need to get Lasso 8.6 to work on El Capitan. Please give some insight!

You’re asking me about something I wrote in October 2015? And expect that I’d remember what I was writing about? :-)

Anyhow, I really can’t be of much help. I don’t run 8.6 myself. Think Eric need to step in here.
Possibly Tim run 8.6 on El Capitan as well.

Re: El Capitan ??

Marc Vos-3
It’s very simple … after some research

Lasso 8.6 on El Capitan
—————————————————

Download the latest Lasso8 installer and run it.

Open the Terminal app.

Check if you have this folder: /usr/local/libexec

$ ls -l /usr/local/libexec/apache2
total 792
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  117008 11 okt  2015 Lasso8ConnectorforApache2.2.so
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  142468 11 okt  2015 Lasso8ConnectorforApache2.4.so
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel   44416 24 mrt 19:55 mod_lasso9-2.4.so
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel   34252 11 okt  2015 mod_lasso9.10.10.so
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel   58428 11 okt  2015 mod_lasso9.so

If not, create it.

$ sudo mkdir /usr/local/libexec
$ sudo mkdir /usr/local/libexec/apache2

and copy the 'Lasso8ConnectorforApache2.4.so' into that folder. Scan Lassotalk for a download link.

Look in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and check the end of that file. It should have the following 3 lines:

$ tail /etc/apache2/httpd.conf
#Begin: Added by Lasso 8.6 installer
Include /private/etc/apache2/users/lasso8.conf
#End: Added by Lasso 8.6 installer

Next, edit file /etc/apache2/users/lasso8.conf and look at the 'LoadModule’-line. It should look like this:

LoadModule lasso8_module /usr/local/libexec/apache2/Lasso8ConnectorforApache2.2.so

Change the 'Lasso8ConnectorforApache2.2.so' into 'Lasso8ConnectorforApache2.4.so'

For Lasso 8 to start when OS X starts, since Mac OS 10.10 you need a LaunchDaemon plist.
Enter the following commands in Terminal:

$ sudo vi /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.lassosoft.lasso8.plist

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
   <dict>
     <key>RunAtLoad</key>
     <true/>
     <key>Label</key>
     <string>com.lassosoft.lasso8</string>
     <key>ProgramArguments</key>
     <array>
       <string>/Applications/Lasso Professional 8/LassoAdmin/Lasso8Service.sh</string>
     </array>
   </dict>
</plist>

$ sudo chown root:wheel /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.lassosoft.lasso8.plist
$ sudo chmod 644 /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.lassosoft.lasso8.plist
$ sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.lassosoft.lasso8.plist

That should do it.

Re: El Capitan ??

asle
Thanks Marc,
This is what I wanted. Finally someone who cares

I have Lasso 9 also but have some big sites running 8.6 and don't think I will put in the work to convert them (or cash out for the 9.3 upgrade). The sites run fine on 8.6. My next step would be to convert the sites to node.js (don't be offended).

Just a question: If I do the steps you suggest, will I be able to do a clean install of Lasso 8.6 or do I have to install 8.6 on OS X 10.10 before upgrading OS X? Just trying to avoid too much work testing.

Re: El Capitan ??

Marc Vos-3
Hi Asle,

The steps describe what I had to do *after* the OS X update to El Capitan.

In 10.10, the old folder structure is still allowed by OS X.
In 10.11, no one is allowed anymore to install stuff into system folders.
That is why since 10.11 there is this /usr/local/libexec/apache2 directory.
The latest L9 installer for OS X also installs its files in this new directory.

I haven’t done a clean install, I upgraded my iMac and MBP with an existing L8 installation.
