Custom Lasso Service Error message?

Stephen Smiroldo-4
I know this has been touched on in the past, but I cant' find how to modify the Lasso Service error message that says "Lasso Error..." in big black letters. Can anyone help? Is it possible in 8.6?

Lasso 8.6, IIS 7

Does Lasso 9 have a more professional default service error message, and does it allow for easy customization? I would think "Lasso Error" would be the LAST thing Lassosoft would want visitors seeing on a website.

Put a file named error.lasso in the webroot.  Done.

Or modify this file (path is for Mac OS X):
/Applications/Lasso Professional 8/LassoAdmin/error.lasso

Details and more fancy shmancy stuff.

Re: Custom Lasso Service Error message?

Stephen Smiroldo-4
No, not a custom error page for site specific errors. I'm talking about the Lasso Connector hard-coded error message.

Is there an easy way to modify this in Lasso 8.6? I know previous versions called for editing the connector itself.

Lasso 9s error page is butt ugly. No attempts to style it in any way.
But it introduces a very handy debugging feature called the error stack. With it tracing where the failure occurred is way easier than in Lasso pre 9.

And you can style your own error page just as easily as before. Just put your own error.lasso in site root and your done.

Don't know if it's new for 9 but you can even have different error pages for different parts of your site.

If you are then yes, you can style it in whatever way you want.
You do that by telling apache what page to use on a type 500 error in the apache config file.
Can't give exact directions right now, not close to my work space. But google error page directives for apache.

Re: Custom Lasso Service Error message?

Stephen Smiroldo-4
No, I'm talking about the error that displays when the Lasso connector (lasso service) is "down"... when a connection error occurs.

We're running IIS7, and as far as I know, setting a custom 500 error page would not alter this error message since, I believe, it's coming from the Lasso connector (Lasso service)itself.

RE: Custom Lasso Service Error message?

Rick Draper-2
Hi Stephen,

You are referring to the glorious "Lasso Error" that is a feature of the Windows world, usually when the server runs out of memory or times out in its connection with IIS.

Yes, it can be modified, but not easily.  I looked into it a long while back (8.*) and it was not a trivial matter.

Very best regards,

Rick

Hi Stephen,

I modified this.  It was a hacky endeavor, but if you've got the stomach
for it, it is reasonably easy.  I popped open the
LassoConnectorForIIS.dll (I think that's the name of it) in my favorite
hex editor, found the section that outputs the <h1>Lasso Error</h1>...
and replaced those characters with something more friendly being careful
to not add or remove characters.  Save the file (after making a backup
of course), restart lasso and IIS, and it worked.

Good luck!

Re: Custom Lasso Service Error message?

Stephen Smiroldo-4
Thanks Daniel,

Ideally, I would like to redirect to a custom error page at an address like: "/secondary/" so it could even be a mini (strictly .htm) site. Maybe a server side include would work in place of the "<h1>Lasso Error</h1>"?

RE: Custom Lasso Service Error message?

Daniel Logue
I really don't know if a server side include would work - you'd have to
test it.  I did get a meta-refresh working as a redirect to another URL,
so there's that option.  I ended up with just a friendly message,
because sometimes I'd get the response from an AJAX request, and I
wanted a friendly message in that context too.

Thanks Daniel,

Ideally, I would like to redirect to a custom error page at an address
like: "/secondary/" so it could even be a mini (strictly .htm) site.
Maybe a server side include would work in place of the "<h1>Lasso
Error</h1>"?
