Comparing compiled versus non compiled LassoApps for non Lasso files

Jolle Carlestam-2
Here’s a question that probably only the really savvy Lassosoft devs can answer.
What would be the speed, or other, consequences of having non lasso files, like images, javascripts, css files etc, served from a pre compiled lasso app in contrast to the same files served from a plan lasso app directory?

I’m thinking that maybe the fact that the files are manipulated in some way in a compiled app, like compressed or whatnot it would force lasso to do some extra processing in order to serve the files. Whereas in a plain lasso app directory they would just be handed over to the web server directly.

What say the experts?

Sounds like an interesting experiment to run, then present on for LDC.

Simply test it with ab.

ab -c20 -n100 http://localhost/lasso9/myapp/somefile.jpg // (or what ever
the path is)
ab -c20 -n100 http://localhost/somefile.jpg

I imagine the straight file would be an order of magnitude faster.

No lassoapps with such files to test here — that type of lasso app has
always puzzled me a touch.

Puzzling might be. But for example mergini is built that way. And it do facilitate distribution of lasso projects.

Sounds like a good plan and I will as soon as I'm back at desk.
Pending that it would still be great if the expert (read Kyle) could fill in with his expertise.

Hm. Not a bad idea. I would have to come up with a sexier headline though.

Well, there are some initial test results in. I am not going to reveal them yet. Can’t give a way the meat of the next LDC presentation, hey Bil…

Let me just say that the results are somewhat surprising. Possibly a bit disappointing, depending on your vantage point.

If he’s still around the list, Brian Middendorf might have some anecdotal evidence. His HostedStore was the most ambitious LassoApp I’ve ever seen to date (though I’m pretty sure its no longer in circulation).

Anecdotal but only of historical value. LassoApps in Lasso 9 is a substantially different beast as compared to older generations. Especially when looking at precompiled LassoApps.
The idea of being able to distribute one file that contains all that’s needed is highly attractive. Especially if there’s no speed penalty.
