Bulk Email Handling

Marc Pinnell-3
Hey all,

I have an old site that is used to assign referees to soccer matches. During the season, a couple of times a week, we need to send a mass email to the list of refs in the system. Started having trouble last season with Att and others not accepting mail from the system (assumably thinking it was spam).

So, what is the considered the current best practice for systems like this? Send individual emails or bulk emails with everyone (or a subset) in the BCC field? Something else?

Secondly, like I mentioned, this is an older L8 site. Anyone want to throw in $0.02 on improvements for the below code? :)

Where: $AddressList is an array of unique addresses....

inline($authInfo_db, -nothing);
        email_batch;
                iterate($AddressList, $Addy);
                        email_send(
                                -to=$Addy,
                                -from=$rtnAdd,
                                -replyTo=$rtnAdd,
                                -contentType='text/html',
                                -extraMIMEHeaders=$MIME_Headers,
                                -subject=$formData->find('subj')->first->second,
                                -body=$Text4Email
                                );
                /iterate;
        /email_batch;
/inline;

Thanks!

marc

I do not send bulk mail from Lasso.  I recently had the same
experience regarding the new anti-spam rules with a third
party's DIY mailing list manager that uses PHP.  The rules are
going to get tighter.  You have to deal with the admin of a mail
server and blacklisting.

Mailchimp deals with that all that crap for you.  Mailchimp is
good for bulk email, and there is an API.  Plus it comes with
lots of nifty features, including tracking opens and clicks,
managing bounces, and TweetFaceGoogPlus'ing your mails.

If this is less of a marketing message, but more of a
transactional/notification message, then Mandrill may be closer
to what you need.

I wrote a system that uses Lasso, MySQL, and the Mailchimp API.
Users can sign up to subscribe to the list, set interests for
customized emails, as well as update their personal
information.  For the client, they have an administrative
interface where they can customize the message to be sent, then
click a button to distribute the mail through Mailchimp.  I also
have webhooks in Mailchimp and scripts in Lasso that keep it all
in sync.
