Bash or Shellshock Bug

fletcher sandbeck-2
This rather serious bug has come to light which affects “bash” the omnipresent shell used on UNIX of all flavors including RedHat, CentOS, Ubuntu, Mac OS X, and others.  The bash shell is most commonly known as the way we interact with the server through SSH or in the Terminal, but it is also used when Apache processes CGIs, in the SSHD process, and in a considerable number of other environments.  Through Lasso it is used at least by many [os_process] users and by those using the [shell] tag.

https://securityblog.redhat.com/2014/09/24/bash-specially-crafted-environment-variables-code-injection-attack/

There is a partial fix for bash available through most auto-update procedures (yum, apt-get, etc.) on Linux.  Mac OS X has not yet been updated.

You should update all your web servers to the latest version of bash now and then again when a complete fix is announced.

Any ideas which versions of OS X are affected?

I’ve been trying to find a conclusive list but not seen it yet.

I think you can assume it affects all relevant versions of OSX. It most definitely is present in Mavericks.

Is also very easy to find out. Run the test in Terminal.

I¹ve personally tested v10.3.9 (is affected), and I¹ve read that the latest
Yosemite is affected, too.  I guess that all Mac OS X versions are.  News
stories are reporting that ³it's thought the vulnerability has existed since
1989.²

It's a pretty easy to patch OS X on your own.  I patched Snow Leopard
and Mavericks without a problem using the following:

mkdir bash-fix
cd bash-fix
curl https://opensource.apple.com/tarballs/bash/bash-92.tar.gz | tar zxf -
cd bash-92/bash-3.2
curl https://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/bash/bash-3.2-patches/bash32-052 |
patch -p0
cd ..
xcodebuild
sudo cp /bin/bash /bin/bash.old
sudo cp /bin/sh /bin/sh.old
build/Release/bash --version # GNU bash, version 3.2.52(1)-release
build/Release/sh --version   # GNU bash, version 3.2.52(1)-release
sudo cp build/Release/bash /bin
sudo cp build/Release/sh /bin
sudo chmod a-x /bin/bash.old /bin/sh.old

Re: Bash or Shellshock Bug

Carl Ketterling
Trevor,

That version of bash is still vulnerable to

    env -i X='() { (a)=>\' bash -c 'echo date'; cat echo

Obviously, it depends on how often environment variables are set with the
‘-i’ flag, but there’s still a vulnerability.

Carl

Thanks --  I see that is on the page in the link I sent ... Not sure if

Looks like they updated the page with the newest -- the code I pasted
before was what they had last night.  The new version on the page will
patch the second vulnerability that Carl mentioned as well.   So just
ignore my pasted procedure and use the latest version posted at the URL
I sent.
