Re: [Announce] Lasso Professional Server 8.1 Update

Jim Van Heule
For those of you that were not in on the beta, this hands down is the
most solid Lasso release I've ever seen. The speed enhancements are
incredible.

I'm already running it live on three servers including my "site from
hell" that typically has brought any previous update attempts since
LP6 to its knees. In fact this site that gets over 1 million hits a
day in now running faster and more stable than ever and a low-end
XServe 2.0GHz SP 2GB system.

On another note. Those of you that are still with LP7, I was able to
update 50 sites over to LP8.1 (another server) with "no" code
revisions. That was probably the sweetest thing that's happened to me
all year!

Re: [Announce] Lasso Professional Server 8.1 Update

In reply to this post by Fletcher Sandbeck
All,

To echo Jim a bit...

This is a SPEEEEED DEMON!  I urge you all to update to v8.1 today if
you have the capability to do so.  If you have fears about updating,
waiting to see the errors and what not that everyone else has run
into, you'll be waiting for a very very very long time.  8.1 is a
very stable and speedy release. Rather than eat my words later (just
in case), I'll state this now that no release is 100%, but this is
damned close folks.  99.8% of the way there.  8.1 was religiously
beaten up, down, inside, outside, on top of, and any other way you
can think of by some of the best minds in the Lasso Universe, under
varying conditions, with LIVE sites.  And truth be told,
listsearch.com was running the beta version of what was 8.06 (now
8.1) weeks and weeks ago.  This is one speedy lil toy.

Several people I know personally who have held on to v6 because it
was speedier than 7 or 8 combined, have pleasantly ingested their
words, jumped ship and upgraded.  This update is TDF!  'The Holy
Trinity' (Kyle, Fletcher, Adam) have really outdone themselves this
time!

"Hallowed be the Holy Trinity."

"So say we all."

Go get folks, download, install, enjoy!  Mmmmmm yum.

Looks like it's time for 8 also here. :-)

After months of lurking on the list, and no time for getting involved
on anithing else but work, I plan to get on 8 next month.

BTW, a big "Ciao" to all listers, it's been a while since I last
posted on the list, but I've been reading almost all messages.

I'll echo what Jim has said as well.  The speed increases alone make
it worthwhile.  I had some pages that doubled and quadrupled speed
with this release.

Thanks Omni!

I updated from 8.0.5 to 8.1 and all my site settings are gone. I had a
"development" site configured that pointed to several data sources and had
lots of security settings but when I click on the "visit" link in the site
listing for "development" the default site (1) is displayed and all my
setting are gone.

I should clarify this by saying that the "development-2" folder is still in
the LassoSites directory so my settings are not technically lost. It's just
when I click on the link to that site in the Site Listing I am taken to the
default-1 site, and of course, that has none of my settings for development.

Do you see the site in the Setup > Sites section of Server Administration?  Have you checked the routing rules to see if they have changed somehow?

The "Visit" links in Server Administration are initially generated heuristically so they can be wrong.  If you create a URL for SiteAdmin.LassoApp on your dev site manually then the next time you visit Server Administration it should pick up on the working URL.

Yes I see the default site and the development site in the list. I've always
been able to use the URL that what was created automatically. What is the
URL supposed to be for the site I created? Both Sites in the list point to
SiteAdmin.0.LassoApp.

Also, I just tried to import my development settings. Fortunately I exported
them so I have an export file of my settings. Unfortunately I get this:

"This site does not have permission to access uploaded files."

What is that about?

Has anyone used this with filemaker server advanced 7?

If you have, does it address any of the performance problems seen
when using lasso with filemaker server advanced 7?

Thanks,

Adam Randall
In reply to this post by Fletcher Sandbeck
Randy,

Verify in the Server Admin that the default site and your development
site have different host/path configurations. If you have the
development server set to host: % ; path: /% then that won't work
because it will chose the default site instead, which has those
criteria. Set up a different host or path to allow your second site
to work.

Adam.

Brian,

To echo a lil more clearly.

While in beta, I had a client job come up.  While Ive sworn up and
down that I'd never ever touch another FMPSA7 job again as long as I
draw breath, I took the gig anyway because I knew the guy personally
and thought I could kick it out quickly.  12 HOURS LATER!!!!! I still
had problems just getting FMPSA to TALK to itself, let alone to
Lasso.  However, with a lil magic from our helpful friends at OP, I
was able to get FMP to talk to itself....finally.

Then the issue became getting the data OUT of FMP and into a SQL
table.  Mind you this is just ONE table.  ONE.  SINGULAR.  UNO.  You
follow ?  5 hrs later, I was still no closer to getting data out of
FMP than I was when I started.  While Lasso saw the tables, and
actually fed back the data, FMP refused and I mean flat out REFUSED
to output the data in a usable form.  I thought the table was
corrupted or something like that...so I rebuilt it.  Cleaned, nipped,
tucked where necessary and still NOTHING.  I finally had to go the
brute force method and prepare a series of inlines (see below**) that
just pulled what I wanted out of the database, then copied that into
a text file and spent many hours cleaning and correcting and finally
I had a working SQL table that I could then start building a site with.

** this is where things got interesting, because I took that as an
opportunity to test out two versions of lasso running the same code
against the same datasource!  On my laptop I'm running 8.0.5, on my
new dev server Im running 8.1.  Both are running at the same speed
(CPU wise), and both have about the same amount of RAM.  Both are
running identical versions of FMPSA and OS X.  What I noted was that
while Lasso was pulling the records, it was waiting AND waiting for
FMP.  On both machines, Lasso was DONE with its request still waiting
for FMP to fill the request.  The kicker here is that this is a small
file, single table/layout, no calc fields, the solution was BUILT in
FMP7 so its not a conversion.  Permissions were wide open.  When I
say small I mean less than 1000 records, 52 fields.  ALL text fields,
no summaries, no subsummaries, no scripts, nothing but textual data.
Lasso would finish its requests for all data in .0032 seconds.  FMP
was still getting the first 100 records.

The problem child is FMP not Lasso.

Yes, this seems to be the case. Both the default and dev sites have host %
and /% configured. I deleted the first entry for the development site and
added host: % and path: /dev but the Visit URLs remains the same for both
the default and development site and I am still sent to the default site
when I click the development link.

The link listed in the ServerAdmin to visit the SiteAdmin won't
change until you actually visit the SiteAdmin for the first time. So,
try doing http://localhost/dev/SiteAdmin.LassoApp

Adam.

Wow, I can get FMSA to talk to the FMP Server just fine- altho I'm
still struggling with the Lasso to FMSA part.  In fact we put up
something with IWP lst week, because it was needed ASAP, and IWP
"just worked."  No big deal, no config issues, no problems.

Now, to get the Lasso to FMSA piece going!

We bought the upgrade from LP7 to LP8 a few weeks ago, and with
today's announcement decided to bite the bullet and just get it
done.  Downloaded 8.1; installed the Lasso Settings Migrator.  My
screen doesn't look at all like the screen shots in the LSM guide
(pg9 and 10).  I get something on the left but nothing on the right.

Do I need to do an export for LassoMySQL and an export for the FMP
datasource?  Or is one export going to take everything?

do I understand correctly, I do Migrate if I'm going from LassoMySQL
to an external MySQL, but I do Export if I'm going from LassoMySQL to
the SQLLite in Lasso?

Thx,

OK, I changed the path to /dev/% and the development site is found again.
Part of the problem may have been Safari. I had to reload the page before
the new link would show up in the list.
