[ANN] Lasso Professional 8.6.0b3

Paul Higgins-3
Lasso Developers,

We are pleased to announce the release of Lasso Professional 8.6.0b3 for
Mac, Linux, and Windows platforms. Download instructions can be found
below. This release includes the following fixes (please note, if you
downloaded a previous version of this installer, you will need to
download again):

- Fixed issue where the -tableEncoding parameter was ignored in the
MySQL connector. (#7331)

- The Lasso installer no longer configures the Default site on IIS. It
now creates a virtual directory. (See Release Notes.txt)

- Fixed issue where Oracle connector crashed Lasso when using -add or
-update.

- Fixed issue where PostgreSQL connector crashed Lasso when using -add
or -update.

- Fixed issue where PostgreSQL return decimals with a precision of
65000+ places.

- Fixed issue with PostgreSQL and UFT-8 data.

- Fixed very small memory leak in MySQL connector.

General Notices - Investigation was continued on:

- Lasso Connector for Apache 2.2 not loading on Windows XP.

- Oracle connector does not currently support UTF-8 data.

Thank you,

Paul

I suspect this fix was specifically for something and someone, but I wonder what a "very small memory leak" is and if/how "very small" may escalate to "very big" at some point.

I've been suffering from Lasso 8.x going silent an/or having MySQL connection issues.

I'm just wondering if this fix will positively affect me.

It was just something I found while perusing the code. "Very small" is the smallest memory leak possible at any one time: 1 byte. It would occur when using a -sql and getting back results containing a zero length string or zero length binary data. It might also have made the column appear to be NULL, when in fact it just had zero length data.

This was found in Lasso 9, but the change was applied to 8.6 as well.

Thanks for the explanation.

If I'm understanding it correctly, then the fix may positively affect me.  I routinely use -SQL inlines where columns returned contain zero length string data.

I downloaded b3-4 over the weekend. Is this the same as b3?

Also, my particular install of Apache 2.2 did not work with installer supplied Lasso connector for Apache 2.2, I copied over the 2.0 connector and it's working OK now.

I'm running Apache 2.2.17 on 10.6.6 Snow Leopard (client, not server), downloaded/compiled via MacPorts.

BTW, I found a nice post for installing Apache, MySQL, SSL, Perl, ImageMagick and a bunch of other open source software that makes it easy to stay current with the latest versions. Important if the OS X Server updates are not happening fast enough and you have outside security testers hounding you to install the latest blah blah blah...

I guess this might have some backward compatible issues for solutions testing for NULL or zero length.
Worth searching thorough code for such cases before applying 8.6 . . .

There's a giant shiny pink button on the homepage with a confusing
label ("Download Lasso for Free -- Version 9") that leads to the
downloads page for all versions, but I definitely agree that a
software company ought to have "Downloads" as part of their primary
navigation throughout the site.

Point taken - please refresh your screens, and see under "Lasso Store" menu, there is now a Downloads menu item.
This takes you to the root directory.

In reply to this post by jasonhuck
It should also be mentioned that there's 2 changes slated to be made here:

1. a more direct "for linux, this is current, and this is how you install it" type approach on the downloads page
2. a more complete repository of all versions of lasso back to 3 i think.

It's on my list... along with just one or two other things :)

Re: [ANN] Lasso Professional 8.6.0b3

Marc Pope-2
Can Lasso 8.6 be installed on CentOS 4.x (e.g. 4.9)? Just curious because I have several customer servers running 4.9 and you can't just click to update to CentOS 5, it's a major pain actually.

If 8.6 requires 5.x, it's going to lead to slower adoption on my part anyway. The ones running 5.x right now, were hacked using Jason's Blog instuctions and I'm not sure what will happen when attempting to install over that.

Re: [ANN] Lasso Professional 8.6.0b3

jasonhuck
All I did to migrate to the yum-based installation from a
custom-hacked one on a dev box here in the office was:

1) back up the entire Lasso folder in /usr/local/, just in case

2) uninstall all Lasso rpms

3) reinstall via yum

The uninstall left the databases, custom startup files, etc., in
place, just like it does on Mac and Windows.

Beta 1 had some permissions issues the first time around that
prevented it from writing to a couple of directories. Paul got that
sorted out pretty quickly, though.

Upgraded to beta 2 with no issues whatsoever. No extra steps, just
'sudo yum update Lasso*'.

Upgraded to beta 3, but as I mentioned in another thread, I'm
skeptical that it actually updated to the correct version, and my
Documentation folder is mostly empty.

This is all on a 32-bit install of CentOS 5.5, fully patched.

Re: [ANN] Lasso Professional 8.6.0b3

I've never tried it. AFAIK it is not officially supported, so while
you can probably get it to run, doing so would be a matter of updating
all the dependencies to the CentOS 5 versions.
